Clean Up Australia – Thank You

Transition The Grove Banner
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

I wanted to thank you for joining us at Leslie Patrick Park for Clean Up Australia Day. The turnout exceeded our expectations and those of Moreton Bay Regional Council who provided a great deal of equipment support. Of course those expectations would not have been exceeded without the contribution of each individual who took part.

So Thanks again!Azure Kingfisher Image

On the wildlife side one of our volunteers let us know that he spotted an Azure Kingfisher nesting by the brook. Apparently this is a good sign of a healthy waterway because these beautiful birds feed on yabbies and small fish in the water rather than lizards and insects.

If you would like to know more about Transition The Grove and the Transition Towns movement around the world we’d like to invite you to a FREE video and discussion evening featuring the movie In Transition 1.0. (View Brochure)

Where: Arana Hills Library 63 Cobbity Crescent Arana Hills
When: 7:00pm Thursday 14 April

If you would like to discuss local issues on-line add details of local events to our community calendar or join a local group of like-minded people around a shared interest like local food local health care facilities transport energy (and many others) you can register on our Community Portal website.

On the other hand if you do not want to receive any more emails from Transition the Grove please click on the unsubscribe link below.

Once again thanks for helping to make our Clean Up Australia Day project a success.

Regards

John Tennock

2010 Wrap-up meeting – Sunday 12 December

Transition The Grove Banner
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

I hope you will be able to join us for our last meeting in 2010.

Looking back over the year Transition The Grove has come a long way and really begun to establish a presence in the community and achieve results. This will be a good time to celebrate and reflect on how far we have come this year and what we have learned along the way.

It is also an opportunity to consider the opportunities and tasks before us and to develop ideas about how we can move forward in 2011 towards fulfilling our aim of building a more resilient and sustainable community.

Out of the November meeting potential ‘way forward’ idea developed as an opportunity to explore a collaboration project between Transition the Grove and Ferny Grove State High School around renewable energy. FGSHS is considering options for community engagement as they set about implementing their School Environmental Management Plan (SEMP). Maria Hill from Ferny Grove State High School will attend the meeting to report on her discussions in the school.

Subgroup activities are ready to be kick-started early in the new year with good numbers of members interested in most of them.

Date: Sunday 12 December 2010
Where: Arana Library
Cobbity Crescent
Arana Hills
Time: 4:00am to 6:00pm

Cheers

John Tennock

NAPLAN results for local schools now analysied on TTG website

Transition The Grove Banner
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

This e-newsletter is being sent to the Education Subgroup.

An analysis of NAPLAN results for local schools is now available at

http://www.transitionthegrove.org.au/index.php/forum/schools-/4666-naplan-report-for-local-schools-2011#4668

While every care has been taken with this analysis it would be greatly appreciated if you are able to check it and let us know if you spot any errors.

It is pleasing to note that overall there is an improvement in results although there are very few results indeed that are Above Average. Most are at best Close To Average with a substantial proportion Below Average and still some Substantially Below Average compared to schools with similar ICSEA values. In general there is still an urgent need in the schools in this community to attend to improving academic performance.

Approval for expenditure for T-shirts

Transition The Grove Banner
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

Transition The Grove Management Committee

Approval for purchase of 12 T-shirts for Hillbrook Sustainability Day.

There has not been time to finalise investigations into the possibility of purchasing T-shirts as fund-raising merchandise. Through progress so far we have learned a lot and made some useful contacts.

One of these contacts is able to produce a small run of T-shirts at a competitive price in time for Hillbroook Sustainability Day on 4 June. In order to make sure we get them in time I have taken the liberty of asking them to go ahead on the following basis:

Shirts (sizes according to individual requests)
12 x 7.50 = $90.00
Printing (designs adapted by Clare to meet printing requirements)
12 x 9.00 = $108.00
Total $198.00 + GST $19.80 = $217.80 TOTAL

We have not been able to discuss whether/how to recover this outlay. I suspect that if we had suggested that shirts were available at (say) $25.00 each we would have had very few takers. I suggest we invite those who are willing and able to make a contribution to do so. This discussion around price will be useful market research before we think about investing in merchandise that may never get used or sold.

Would you please approve expentidure of up to $220.00 (to allow for possible rounding discrepancies etc) for this purpose.

Would you please therefore Voting to approve expenditure of up to $220.00 (to allow for possible rounding discrepancies etc) for this purpose. (You will have to log-on to the web-site). Alternatively you can log-in and go to ‘Voting’ on the main menu.

Please contact me if you have any questions.

Regards

John Tennock

Local History Group Project Planning Meeting

Transition The Grove Banner
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

This e-Newsletter is being sent to the Local History Subgroup.

Please come and discuss a proposal for preserving the historical kiln bricks that the Local History Subgroup were able to salvage from the Ferny Grove Station carpark excavations.

Date:  This Saturday morning: 10th March 10:30-11:30am

Where: 48 Corrofin St Ferny Grove

RSVP: 3851 1016 or administrator@transitionthegrove.org.au

We’ll begin by inspecting the salvaged bricks.

Background:

Someone who knows about these things was most interested in the story about the old kilns found under the Ferny Grove Station carpark next to and under the Conavalla St footpath.

It is too late now but apparently the Environmental Protection Agency is the key contact about any historical sites and they come under legislation to protect them if they are old enough (about 1950).

By acting fast some members of the Local History Subgroup were able to save a trailer-load of the old kiln bricks. We also got a few photos of the (at that stage) still intact kiln under the pavement.

At the moment these are just being stored but we are now being urged to approach Queensland Rail to get these bricks incorporated in some way into the new station as a part of our local history.

It would also be most valuable if we could get a sense of how long ago the kilns were built and active.
