CSIRO Energymark – Join our local group and reduce your carbon footprint!

Transition The Grove - Energy Group
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

Transition the Grove joins CSIRO Energymark

One of the key requirements for sustainable living is for all of us to reduce the amount of energy we consume. No amount of solar panels will get us out of trouble if we keep consuming energy at ever increasing rates. Significant energy savings can come from simply being more efficient in the way we use energy. Now the CSIRO has launched the Energymark program in conjunction with Brisbane City Council’s Green Heart environmental sustainability program which aims to make Brisbane a carbon-neutral city by 2026.

Energymark involves groups of households getting together for 8 meetings. These meetings are lead by a group coordinator and are supported by CSIRO energy experts who can help the group through any problems they face. It is a practical course and Transition The Grove has registered as a group convener. We are open to participants in our local community.

Energymark is helping households and communities reduce their carbon footprints lower energy usage and save on power bills. The program brings people together in small groups to learn about energy and climate change issues and discuss what they can do to make a difference…

You don’t need to know a lot about energy and climate change to participate.

This is your opportunity to learn about these issues and how you can reduce your impact on the environment.

If you would like to participate and haven’t already done so:
Click here to join our Energymark Group

Our Energymark Group Number is: EMG-00694

We plan to launch this group at our Carbon Nation film night (details below)

  • Transition The Grove – Movie and discussion night

  • When: Thursday 22 September – 7:00 pm

  • Where: Ferny Grove State High School Library – McGinn Road

  • Bring: A friend

  • Cost – FREE! – Supper included. Gold coin donation appreciated.

I hope you will be able to join us.

Regards

John Tennock
Group Convenor

Towards Zero Waste Subgroup: National Garage Sale

Transition The Grove Banner
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

This e-newsletter is being sent to members of the Towards Zero Waste Subgroup.

Thanks to Emma for finding this important link.

http://www.garagesaletrail.com.au/

This website provides a way to register to be part of the National Garage Sale which this year is on 5th May.

It makes it easy to publicise a garage sale you (or a group) are having. It also makes it easy for buyers to find you and to set aside a morning for going around a trail of garage sales easily.

Why not register to have a garage sale yourself on the 5th May via this site?

As a member of the Towards Zero Waste Subgroup how about doing what you can to promote the www.garagesaletrail.com.au website and the National Garage Sale on 5th May.

Let’s see how many locals in The Grove we can get to register to have garage sales on 5th May or going around searching for treasures at local garage sales.

Ferny Grove Festival – 28 April 2012

To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

I’m on the Ferny Grove State School P&C Committee. A group of our members are organising a Ferny Grove Festival on 28 April 2012. (A variation on the traditional school fete). They plan to help celebrate our community by including a ‘community showcase’ where local community groups can participate hopefully by showing some aspect of what they do in the community.

This is an opportunity to come up with some creative ideas about how to increase our public profile in the local community.

If you have any ideas about how Transition The Grove might contribute to and benefit from this event please let me know by email or phone. (3851 1016 or 0432 473 703)

The P &C Committee has asked me to be the liaison with Transition The Grove.

Here are links to the P&C Documentation. Intro Letter – Application Form

Cheers

Update to Transition The Grove Energy Subgroup

Transition The Grove - Energy Group
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

This is to keep everyone in the Energy Sub-group up to date with progress.

Firstly a reminder about the presentation at Transition the Gap on the 100% Renewables Campaign by Luke Reade 7:00 for 7:30pm Wednesday night 30th March at 98 Yoorala St The Gap (SOWN HQ and Yoorala Street Community Garden). This will be a great opportunity to get informed about this campaign. Unfortunately Anne and I can’t make it but I hope others in the group will.

Clare has made a start on starting a discussion about ideas for slogans that could be used on tee-shirts signs (out front of house) badges caps mugs and a range of appropriate low-cost low-carbon-consumptive items. You can contribute to this discussion on the forum here.

Peter emailed advice that “I am using AWSW recourses and am putting together a commercial option to solve the issue of the 100% Green energy for the 35000 odd house holds and businesses in the Valley. I hope to have it completed by next meeting“.

I have a meeting with the Ferny Grove State High School SEMP (School Environment Management Plan) committee on 11 April to discuss and develop the idea of a community ‘Energy Expo’ at the school. I will report back after this meeting.

Further to this I have been able to confirm that the Brisbane branch of the ATA (Alternative Technology Association) are keen to participate in this event. ATA could well provide some intersting exhibits and expert guest speakers.

I have also had confirmation of interest from several ‘solar’ product vendors with whom I have had contact from time to time. Hopefully we will be able to involve a diverse range of exhibitors and presenters.

I would like to encourage everyone to register on the GreenStreet http://www.greenstreet.net.au/ web-site to experience this process and see how it might be useful to further our aims of reducing the carbon footprint in The Grove. This is a Pine Rivers Climate Action Network initiative to encourage residents to share ideas knowledge and achievements in reducing their personal carbon footprint.

Remember that we are promoting a public video and discussion evening at Arana Library. The following was published in The Hills Echo this month and will be distributed more widely over the next few days.

Transition The Grove invites you to a free public video and discussion evening about building a local community that is sustainable environmentally responsible and resilient in the face of disruptive events. Watch locals put centrally located land back into food production. Enjoy the zest with which reskilling expertise is passed along. Tour a school where community building is taught. And go inside the council chambers as members discuss passing ordinances to accelerate Transition initiatives.

And there are the children. Lots of children. They are woven as a strand through the piece; their beaming faces a glimpse of a future with more holiness. We watch them as they learn and we listen as they speak in their own voices. A poised young lady emerges as one of the film’s narrators.

But the notion of community resilience is really the star of this show. The movie will be followed by a facilitated discussion and a chat over supper.

Where: Arana Hills Library  63 Cobbity Crescent  Arana Hills

When: 7:00pm Thursday 14 April

Cost: Free (Gold coin donation appreciated)

This coincides with our next Energy Group meeting but we will still be able to discuss progress and ideas as well as seeing the movie.

I look forward to seeing you there.

Regards

John Tennock

Clean Up Australia Day Opportunities

Transition The Grove Banner
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

Plans for our Clean Up Australia Day site at Leslie Patrick Park are progressing well.

The event has been publicised in (BCC) Councillor Andrews Wines’ newsletter and is being strongly supported by Moreton Bay Regional Council.

MBRC support includes a lot of additional equipment assistance signage and information together with a budget for catering (Sausage Sizzle).

Golden Valley Keperra Lions Club are considering participating by adding some volunteers and providing a Barbecue but this has yet to be confirmed.

There are several key organisational roles and it would be great to have these filled on the day by Transition The Grove members. If you can help even just for an hour it would be greatly appreciated. Please contact me on 07 3851 1016 SMS to 0432 478 703. or email to john@tennock.com I will put together a roster.

For example:

Setting Up: We will erect our marquee banner and other signage in a visible location and set up facilities for sending out volunteers properly equipped. Early help with setup from 6:30am would be appreciated.

Volunter Registrations: All volunteers MUST be registered to be covered by Clean Up Australia Day insurance. The best way to ensure this is to have a dedicated person filling this role.

Safety Guide: Volunteer safety is of paramount importance. Someone needs to check that all volunteers are properly briefed and have appropriate safety equipment (covered footwear gloves hat sun-block safety instructions).

Flying Squad: Volunteers are instructed only to pick up safe and accessible rubbish. Heavy or dangerous items must be recorded accurately and reported to the council who will collect them during the following week. Tongs and a Sharps Container are provided for safe handling of needles and syringes. We need a ‘Flying Squad’ to respond to calls from volunteers who might find any of these items and deal with them appropriately.

Even if you can’t take part in one of these vital roles I hope you will come along and join in the clean up.

More details about the event here.

John Tennock
