Welcome New Member

Dear {usertag:name}

Welcome new member Jacci Longstaff. She has joined the Food & Gardening Recreation Business & Finance Education Building & Construction and Facilities Sub-groups. They have a local electrical business and are local residents.

Jacci just to let you know The Hills Community Garden Group Inc has been started and we are letting Transition The Grove members who are interested in growing food know about it. They may be having a site meeting this coming Sunday morning at the Patricks Rd State School which I’m sure you would be welcome to come along to. It needs final confirmation so keep an eye on the Community Calendar.

I’ve told Jacci about the Forums – Business and Economy and suggested she put a post on there about their business. We are very keen to support and encourage local businesses – just steer away from advertising and making claims that are not straight facts.

The meeting on Monday night with Jackie Carpenter and Dr Roger Wade from the UK was a terrific evening. It is always a bit of a challenge organising events like this for members and the community – we are still learning how they will be supported. There was a great turn-up of members from Brisbane’s Transition community and Jackie and Roger turned out to be top-notch speakers. They both were able to help us see a bit more about what is happening in the outside world and to reflect on what Australia is doing from fresh eyes. Jackie spoke about peak oil and Roger (who has just retired from a life’s career as a climate scientist and climate policy-maker in the UK) spoke on climate change. Then they showed us some wonderful slides of their co-housing community in Cornwall – it looked so alive and fun. I’m still very envious of all their piglets sheep and wonderful vege gardens – the soil is so rich. They also have a lot of celebratory occasions. The barn dance was the one I liked the best. They just have such fun. That’s what we need here! Fun! We finished off with a great supper and people talked for ages.

Transition events are put on the Community Calendar and we also send out notices for events for a particular group such as the Energy Subgroup or the Food & Gardening Subgroup.

So welcome Jacci again. We look forward to meeting you some time. Hope you find Transition The Grove valuable to living and working locally.

Warm regards

Anne Tennock

Energymark

Dear {usertag:name}

Energymark

Energymark is helping households and communities reduce their carbon footprints lower energy usage and save on power bills.

Energymark is not selling anything so there is no confusing marketing hype or political spin.

The program brings people together in small groups to learn about energy and climate change issues and discuss what they can do to make a difference.

You don’t need to know a lot about energy and climate change to participate.

Community members volunteer as group convenors and bring together small groups of people (such as family friends neighbours and workmates) for a series of discussions on energy climate change water and waste.

Over eight sessions groups work through information and discussion material provided by CSIRO. Participants also complete questionnaires and carbon footprints.

If you would like to find a local group to join or volunteer as a group convener or would like more information we would love to hear from you.

Water Subgroup Newsletter – links fixed

Transition The Grove Banner
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

Water has featured so much recently both in Queensland and now in Japan. But there is also a good side to it!

The Southern Oscillation Index was back up to 24 today so we still may have wet times ahead. The major South East Queensland dam levels are at 87.4%.

World Water Day is on the 22nd of March – very soon. Next Tuesday. I keep hoping there will be enough interest to do something locally that is water-related. Why do my thoughts go towards celebrating and enjoying our delightful local water courses? Either by walking or picnicing by them.  Enoggera Reservoir would be deserving of a walk – there is a great walking track by it and the country would be absolutely beautiful at the moment.

Bellbird Park off Mt Nebo Rd would also be a good place to spend time by Cedar Creek.

The Healthy Waterways Awards are now open for nominations. The prize money is significant. Nominating local groups would at least give recognition of the work they do. We have quite a few hard-working bushcare groups working along Cedar Creek Kedron Brook and Downfall Creek.

Healthy Waterways 2011 Awards – open for nominations

The 2011 Healthy Waterways Awards are now open for entries. There are nine Award categories open to individuals community groups and organisations who are working towards achieving healthy waterways.

Each entrant has the chance to win a share in $23500 prize money with the most innovative of all category winners receiving the Minister’s Grand Prize worth $10000.

Ratepayers are continuing to be concerned about water pricing particularly in Moreton Bay Regional Shire. The following group is pretty vocal.

Moreton Bay Ratepayers Action Group Inc. – Pine Rivers South:

  • www.theratepayer.com
  • President – Dennis Austin – dennis@theratepayer.comThis e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
  • Chairman – Geoff McKay
  • PO Box 182 Clontarf Beach 4019
  • Watchdog on Council’s rates charges fees expenditure provision of infrastructure & services
  • Responsibly & fairly to represent the aims of all ratepayers

There was a huge amount of interest in determining the role of Wivenhoe water releases in the Brisbane floods. How we balance the need to store water for use and to protect against droughts and heavy use by a large population – against flood mitigation is a recognised contradiction everywhere dams are used for these purposes.

The Water Forum gets regular interest. If you find material about water that is locally relevant do post it on the Forum and always be prepared to have your say.

Here are links to articles and forum posts:

Saudi Arabia’s aquifer empty

Well water is something we can reflect on from so many angles.

There are currently 15 people who have registered interest in being part of the Water Subgroup.  Can I suggest you email me at administrator@transitionthegrove.org.au with what you would like to happen? Where and when would best suit you to meet with the group?

Let’s make a start.

ATA Brisbane Branch Meeting – Thursday 23rd of February

Transition The Grove Banner
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

Alternative Technology Association – Brisbane Branch Meeting

When: Thursday 23rd February
Time:
7:15pm for 7:30pm start
Where:
Albion Peace Centre 102 McDonald Rd Windsor (underneath Albion Overpass near Blackmore St; UBD 140 Ref. C14) Adjacent to Albion Railway Station.
Cost:
$3 to help cover venue hire costs

Topic:- Containing The Human Footprint – A Social or Technological Challenge?

ATA’s first guest speaker for 2012 is Dr. Jane O’Sullivan from the University of Queensland and she will speak on the aforementioned topic.

Several decades ago Paul Ehrlich developed the IPAT formula: Environmental Impact = Population x Affluence x Technology. Although never an adequate explanation of humanity’s ecological role its central message is relevant yet still widely denied. To manage human impact we need to manage all three factors and recognise the interplay between them.

Jane O’Sullivan is a member of the national executive of Sustainable Population Australia and President of its Queensland branch. She is also a climate change activist and has represented SPA at International Climate Change conferences. She has a particular interest in the economic implications of population growth.

During Jane’s talk she will explore the opportunity cost of absorbing technological improvements with population growth and the synergy when population growth reduction magnifies the benefit of technological and behavioural change.

This should prove to be a very interesting evening and a great topic of conversation stimulated even more by questions from members and guests. Jane will definitely be a speaker not to be missed.

If you would like to know more about the IPAT Theory visit this Website:-

http://populationmatters.org/analysis/sustainability/ipat-equation/

Guests will be made more than welcome. You don’t need to be a member of ATA. Light refreshments will be served after the meeting where further debate is generally the order of the day over a cup of tea or coffee.

Committee meeting from 6.30pm all welcome.

Kind regards
John Clark
Convenor ATA Brisbane Branch
