Voting On Hire of Arana Library Meeting Room

Transition The Grove

To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

This email is going to all members of the Transition The Grove management committee.

I have been working on a simple way for members to vote on routine administrative matters without having to call a formal meeting. Hopefully that will mean that the times we can arrange to get together can focus on face to face group meetings active projects.

As a ‘real world’ trial of the method I have implemented would you please logon to the web-site then click on this {joomlacontent:436|type:title|link} page link. Click on the Voting link read the proposal and record your vote.

This is a simple decision that was first raised for discussion on the forum on 14 July so it seems reasonable to close the vote at 6:00pm on Friday 17 September.

The results will be forwarded to the secretary for minute keeping.

Please let me know if you experience any difficulties voting.

Regards

John Tennock

Transition The Grove – Get Together 12 September

Transition The Grove

To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

For Transition The Grove to make a difference in the community it is important that we meet together as often as possible and get to know each other personally.

While the internet generally and our web-site in particular can facilitate discussion and planning it is when we get together ‘in the real world’ that things start to happen.

Firstly we need a place to meet. To get started we have made a regular monthly booking at the Arana Hills Library meeting room.

The next meeting is:

When: Sunday 12 September 2010 4:00pm to 6:00pm
Where: Arana Hills Library Nerellan ParkCobbity CrescentArana Hills

If you have any questions suggestions or suggested topics for discussion please login to the website post a reply on this discussion forum.

As it turns out this venue booking coincides with the only suitable date for the Community Garden group to get together and check out some prospective sites. Hopefully after their explorations they will still have enough energy to come to the library and share how they got on.

I will send out another email later in the week with more specific details about the meeting. Meantime please put it in your diary.

Regards

John Tennock

Please find attached the flyer for the Caring for McGregor Way Day event this coming weekend (Saturday 23rd June) at McAlroy Lagoon on McGregor Way Ferny Grove from 11am to 2pm.

Come along to McAlroy Lagoon to find out how this area is going to be rejuvenated.

The Community Garden Information Day is also on Saturday 23rd June from 11am to 1pm. It is happening at Julatten Park (Selkirk Crescent end of the park). You can walk through the park from Upper Kedron Rd.  Have a look at the design for the garden. If you want to get involved now is the time to throw your hat in the ring for one of the garden plots.

Fortunately these two events are not too far apart from each other so why not come along to both of them!

As well as people who can commit about 3 hours per month to collect data in the field we also invite interested persons to contribute to the strategy and
planning arm of the program.

Brisbane City Council’s Pest Plant Survey Program
Due to commence in Cabbage Tree Creek Catchment

This Brisbane City Council project targets weed
control on private land through a detailed Pest
Management Plan. It engages landowners where
possible to discuss options and to help identify weed
species. Working on a sub-catchment level it
targets areas of high environmental significance
where Council and community groups already
deliver effective weed control programs.
We aim to be in the Cabbage Tree Creek
Catchment by April 2012.
The aim is for a reduction of weeds not complete
eradication on private land to compliment works
from other Council projects.
Owners have 12 months to carry out the weed
management work. A re-inspection is carried out at
3 months to check that work is underway. This
project is coordinated within Compliance and
Regulatory Services in Council.
Before coming to an area Council advertises in the
Courier Mail. We then letter box drop the properties
that we intend to survey with information about the
program. Residents then have the option to be
home during the inspection or they may leave
Council officers to do the inspection when they are
not home.
Properties with current weed management or few
weeds may be given weed fact sheets for
education instead of a management plan.
Officers offer a free site visit to discuss the
management plan and to identify each weed
species found.
The process is intended to make weed treatment
more accessible to the property owner to
encourage them take ownership of it and give them
some guidance. An important part of this is the
discussion regarding exactly what the issues are on
their site and what they need to do about it.
Cabbage Tree Creek has been selected for its high
environmental value and to complement works
currently underway in the area.

This program is according to a statutory
requirement under the Land Protection (Pest &
Stock Route Management) Act 2002 (LPA).
Weed species listed in the Invasive Species
Management Plan are exempt from protection
under the NALL (Natural Areas Local Law).
However these species need to be removed in
such a way as not to interfere with soil profiles or
surrounding protected vegetation.
For further information please contact
Compliance and Regulatory Services on 3403
8888.
You can find a list of council and state declared
weeds and species management plans for
weeds and animals on Council website.

Food Scenarios – What will we be eating in ten years time?

Transition The Grove Banner
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

7pm Thursday 17th November: Food Scenarios open forum discussion evening

Ferny Grove State School Library

We’re being encouraged to work towards a community-involved approach of developing scenarios of possible futures and how they might relate to what initiatives we put in place.

Developing scenarios is a tool to use in helping us imagine and design the future we want.

Without any experience of doing this we thought we might start with an evening for generating future scenarios about food together.

The Ferny Grove State School (PRIMARY) Library is booked for 7pm onThursday 17th November.

Some suggestions to think about:

Q. What have you heard about the future of food globally?

Q. Do you think Australians will have enough affordable food for Australians in the foreseeable future?

Q. How secure is our food supply?

Q. Would it make sense to be developing local sources of food supply here and if so what are some things we might do?

Q. What potential food supply resources do we have locally?

Q. What key skills do we have locally?

Hope you can make it along to share your ideas. Depending on how many people can make it we’ll break up into small groups so everyone can be heard.

If this scenario-builidng format can be developed well it can be used for other topics too.

Cheers

 Anne

Welcome new member

Transition The Grove Banner
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

Please welcome new member Matt Siggins. Matt is the Labor Candidate for Enoggera Ward.

There is an Energy Subgroup meeting at the Ferny Grove State High School Resource Centre tonight about 7pm (Thursday 12th May).

Meeting last night with the Transition The Gap management group planning is starting for a joint Transition Towns presentation for the North-West of Brisbane (Transition The Grove Transition The Gap and Enoggera Transition) at the Hillbrook Sustainability Day on Saturday 4th June. It should be a great day and I hope you will plan to be ther and take part.

We are discussed having a joint get-together at Enoggera Reservoir now the weather is cooler and the snakes are going to hibernate for the winter. It is a beautiful area for a walk by the Reservoir and a picnic. More to the point for the Water Group it is our water supply in The Grove.  We could have lots of interesting discussions about the on-going enquiry into the floods and Wivenhoe Dam while we walk by the lake! Anyone who would like to help with planning or would be definitely interested in this as a get-together opportunity if you could let us know – Email administrator@transitionthegrove.org.au

Warm regards
