Welcome New Member – Johanna Hood

To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

Welcome Johanna Hood Johanna says: My aim is to utilise my backyard for veges and to become better informed about alternative energy sources and water.

Most interested to read also that you have been part of a choir. It feels like song and music are something really good to happen more and more locally here that the more of us who can join in the better.

Johanna has nominated the food & gardening transport environment education water The Heart The Hands and towards zero waste sub-groups.

Johanna you might like to join in the Clean Up Australia Day activities at Leslie Patrick Park site which Transition The Grove is supporting. Some of us will be there with gloves and hat and good footwear on to go and collect rubbish. Last year was great fun and well worthwhile. Hope it should be good this year. It is best if you register with the Clean Up Australia Day website although you can just turn up. Transition The Grove will have morning tea afterwards for members who participate.

There is an Energy Sub-group meeting next Thursday evening (2nd February) at 7pm at the Resource Centre at Ferny Grove State High School which you are welcome to come along to.

There is a Northern Catchment Groups evening at Downfall Creek coming up with a guest speaker about Brisbane frogs. These evenings are always most interesting and an opportunity to meet and network with people over a good supper beforehand. This one could possibly result in some frog hunting/watching too.

The Hills District Community Garden Group which is the local channel for community gardens here is currently working on getting two projects up and running: a garden at the Patricks Rd State Preschool site and getting land for a community garden in the park off Upper Kedron Rd by the creek. The contact for that is Jo Barkworth who is also a Transition The Grove member.

You can go onto the Groups tab on the website and that will enable you to contact any of the members in the subgroups you are part of.

Or turn up for activities that we send notifications through about.

Or better still be part of organising some for others. The Transition The Grove website gives you tools to communicate with other members and you can literally just use them to start things you think would be good to have happening or ask for support for what you need.

Hope to meet you soon

Hillbrook Sustainability Day

Dear {usertag:name}

Hillbrook Sustainability Day is on Saturday 4 June from 10:00am to 6:30pm. Follow these links so see the Brochure and the Program.

Transition The Grove is planning to participate along with our neighbouring Transition Towns Transition Enoggera and Transition the Gap and other transitioners from around Brisbane.

I hope you will be able to join us for what is sure to be an enjoyable and interesting day.

It would really help our planning and organising to have a clear idea of who is planning to come along so if you could let me know if you are coming and what times you can be available it would help us make sure our stand is manned throughout the day.

We are doing our best to purchase an initial small run of T-shirts emblazoned with the new Transition The Grove logo design. It would be really helpful if you could let me know what size T-shirt you wear so that we can match our initial order and closely as possible with the sizes required for those participating in Hillbrook Sustainability Day. No guarantee’s that we will fully satisfy everyone but we’ll do our best.

I would really appreciate it if you could simply reply to this email letting me know…

  1. If you can make it on 4 June
  2. What times you can be available
  3. What size T-shirt you prefer.

I hope you can make it.

Cheers

John Tennock

Energy Group Meeting Thursday 12 May 2011

Transition The Grove - Energy Group
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

You are receiving this email because you are subscribed to the Transition the Grove Energy Group mailing list.

Our next meeting will be at the Ferny Grove State High School library at 7:00pm on Thursday 12 May 2011.

The following press release has been circulated for inclusion in local newsletters wherever possible. We look forward to meeting up with some new and prospective members.

Our Carbon Footprint

Local community group Transition the Grove is partnering with Ferny Grove State High School on a project to reduce the carbon footprint of our community. You need only look around the neighborhood to see that many residents have already installed solar panels in a move towards more sustainable energy sources. Among those who have made the move there many stories about their experience. Others are held back by uncertainty arising from a great confusion of media information marketing material and government incentives. Transition the Grove’s Energy Group invites you to join in a community discussion in which those who are considering the change to renewable energy and those who have already made the move can get together and share their insights and experiences.

When: Thursday 12 May at 7:00pm (2nd Thursday each month)
Where: Ferny Grove SHS Library 26 McGinn Road Ferny Grove
Cost: FREE! Gold coin donation appreciated.

If you are able to help on the night it would be greatly appreciated. Please give me a call on 3851 1016 or 0432 478 703 if you can help with:

  • Set-up (Chairs etc)
  • Bringing something for supper
  • Greeting visitors and making them welcome
  • Writing name tags
  • Help facilitate discussion
  • Washing up after supper
  • Packing up (Chairs etc)
  • Anything else you think might be useful
  • Just being there…

I look forward to seeing you on Thursday.

Cheers

John Tennock

Health Literacy proposal

Transition The Grove Banner
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

I met with the Minister for Health Geoff Wilson MP yesterday morning to discuss a proposal for an on-going series of monthly health seminars on topics such as heart asthma sight men’s health….. drawing guest speakers from the main bodies such as the Heart Foundation. These would be held in a local venue and the aim would be to work to steadily build local awareness of the forums and to involve major health stakeholders in the community so that we were ending up with a coordinated local health literacy campaign. We talked about getting researchers from one of the universities involved to evaluate the effectiveness of the program as a health campaign in a tightly defined local area.

The initial proposal was met very positively and there will be future meetings about this.

You have all indicated that you have an interest in local health. Would you like to take part in the discussions about planning this and the organisation of the forums (probably a coordinated local dissemination of information about them and then taking RSVPs and ensuring the venue is well set up the guest speakers organised and supper provided). This shouldn’t be difficult to organise and we anticipate it will be well-supported. It is an opportunity for Transition The Grove’s Health Subgroup to start to make a difference to health locally and to have a project where we are working cooperatively with the other health stakeholders in this valley.

Get back to me if you want to get involved (reply to this email) and we’ll take it from there.

Warm regards

Anne Tennock

Energy Sub-group Meeting 7 June

Transition The Grove - Energy Group
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

Energy Sub-group Meeting 7 June
With the experience of planning our “Grove Energy Expo” behind us I’m hoping that our next Energy Group meeting will be an opportunity to discuss what we have learned and to plan a new initiative.
The decision to morph the Expo into the Ferny Grove Festival arose from the simple reality that we were unable to generate enough exhibitors to make the Expo a worthwhile experience for visitors or to ensure enough visitors to make it worthwhile for the exhibitors. It is unfortunate that the Ferny Grove Festival was rained out depriving us of the opportunity to engage with our local community about Energy.
The original proposition was that interest in the event would be stimulated by the desire of local residents for clear and trustworthy information about how to reduce their power bill and ultimately their carbon footprint by various means including Solar PV Solar hot water and improved energy efficiency.  It appears that the ‘hip pocket nerve’ is still not sensitive enough to generate the numbers needed for an Expo type event.
I suggest that the focus of the next meeting should be to brainstorm some fresh ideas about effective ways to reduce the carbon footprint of The Grove community.

To stimulate this discussion I have checked out the websites of some other Transition Towns to see what their Energy Groups are up to. You might like to explore the links below:

Welcome New Member

Dear {usertag:name}

Please welcome new member Rachel Apelt to the Environment Governance Community Cultural Values and Towards Zero Waste Subgroups.

Rachel says: Hi I’m an artist Gestalt Therapy practitioner and I currently work in the field of Community Engagement. I am  passionate about our local forests (Samford Conservation Area and Bunyaville CA) and am concerned about apparent low awareness in the local community of environmental issues.

Remember – do encourage your local friends and family to join Transition The Grove – the more local coverage the better.

Also it would be a help if more people got actively involved.  We now have about 55 members and there is heaps of potential for people to be involved organising making things happen for the group.

Warm regards

Welcome New Member

Transition The Grove Banner
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

Please welcome new member Kegan Scherf to the Water Energy Health Business & Economy Environment Governance Security and Towards Zero Waste Sub-groups.

Kegan is Campaign Director for Matt Siggins in Enoggera Ward [Matt is a Transition The Grove member] Ferny Grove Neighbourhood Watch and West Arana Leagues Club.

Transition The Grove Inc does not support any particular political party and members of any political party are welcome to join if they agree to support our aims.

The Forums are a place where issues can be discussed and debated. It is not to be used for political campaigning but information about candidates and their local contributions can be entered there. Often information about who political candidates are is not widely available in the electorate until you go to vote so we are trying to get details of all candidates and make them available as soon as they are known.

Local events organised by political parties may be put in the Community Calendar.

We are getting quite a few members joining with political backgrounds of all colours (I am aware of LNP ALP and Citizens Electoral Council – quite a mix) and so far it seems to be working fine. Ideally these will prove to be locals who care about the area and want to work to make a difference locally here. Some are finding the Community Calendar tool a useful way of finding what is on – but the more people who contribute to it the more effective it is for this.

It is also important to keep in mind that the Transition Town movement is about creating local options for a future that we see severely affected by climate change and peak oil. Most political parties aren’t focusing on local resilience adapting in place and reducing our dependence on carbon-fuels the way Transition Towns are.

There is another reason why having involvement from members who are politically aware is valuable. These are usually people who also understand there is a lot to governing and providing all the systems and services we all rely on for our lives. Quite typically they want to join all the sub-groups about providing our core security and infrastructure. Great! This is where the real work of planning for our future here locally lies.

I hope that the Forums can be a place where locals of all political colours can discuss issues so that real wisdom emerges.

Warm regards

Anne Tennock
