Health Literacy proposal

I met with the Minister for Health Geoff Wilson MP yesterday morning to discuss a proposal for an on-going series of monthly health seminars on topics such as heart asthma sight men’s health….. drawing guest speakers from the main bodies such as the Heart Foundation. These would be held in a local venue and the aim would be to work to steadily build local awareness of the forums and to involve major health stakeholders in the community so that we were ending up with a coordinated local health literacy campaign. We talked about getting researchers from one of the universities involved to evaluate the effectiveness of the program as a health campaign in a tightly defined local area.

The initial proposal was met very positively and there will be future meetings about this.

You have all indicated that you have an interest in local health. Would you like to take part in the discussions about planning this and the organisation of the forums (probably a coordinated local dissemination of information about them and then taking RSVPs and ensuring the venue is well set up the guest speakers organised and supper provided). This shouldn’t be difficult to organise and we anticipate it will be well-supported. It is an opportunity for Transition The Grove’s Health Subgroup to start to make a difference to health locally and to have a project where we are working cooperatively with the other health stakeholders in this valley.
