Welcome New Member Leonie Moorshead

Transition The Grove Banner
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

This e-newsletter is being sent to the Transport Health Environment Energy Governance Security The Head and The Heart subgroups.

Welcome new member Leonie Moorshead. Leonie is a Keperra resident who is passionate about seeing The Grove district thrive. She is a Town Planner and has a passion for urban environments that are healthy happy well connected and sustainable. She believes that a community is only as strong as the people who choose to build it and she wants to be someone who builds The Grove district into a resilient community.

I had a talk with Leonie and she is interested in local security and Neighbourhood Watch for Keperra. I suggested she might like to look through the Security Forum which has quite a lot of stuff on it. And that if she is interested she could pick up and work with the members who are currently in the Security Subgroup. There are currently 10 of us including Sheila Siggins who is the Area Coordinator of Ferny Grove Neighbourhood Watch (Area 10) and John and I are Block Coordinators in that Area too. This can be done directly through the Groups Tab.

The real need at this stage of the Transition The Grove’s development is for people to start exploring how they can take a more active role. The best way to start getting involved is slowly in gradual steps. Pick a territory! Like the Security Subgroup. Start taking an interest in the issues. Read up on some of them. Work out how to use the Groups Tab to contact the other members in the Subgroup. Only take it at a pace you can handle. [Local happens organically at its own pace. Be comfortable.] If they are in a Subgroup it is because they have already identified that is a topic they are interested in. So you have somewhere to start finding common ground. Remember we are all locals all part of this community. The sooner we get to know each other and work together the sooner we will be building a future here together and having fun.

All the best

Welcome New Member Emma Crameri

Dear {usertag:name}

This e-newsletter is being sent to the Food & Gardening Transport Health Environment Education Energy Water and Towards Zero Waste subgroups.

Welcome new member Emma Crameri. Emma is interested in organic gardening and permaculture and has joined the above subgroups.

I love seeing the word Permaculture in people’s stories. The Transition Town movement grew out of a Permaculture course in Ireland. Some of us are keen on using Permaculture principles in our gardens and in building sustainability into all the systems of our lives. It simply works brilliantly. The HD Community Garden group has been focusing on getting some community garden sites started but there is also potential for Permablitzes and for visiting around our gardens to share and learn from each other and get inspired.

Remember the Ferny Grove Festival is coming up at the Ferny Grove State School on 28th April in the afternoon and Transition The Grove will have a marquee there. There’ll be lots of chances to help and get involved. If you have green thumbs how about potting up some seedlings or cuttings for edible plants for it. If you have a local health business do you have some pamphlets about what you do that could be handouts? How about coming along and talking to folk about your ideas about sustainability and food growing and living locally here?

Transition The Grove t-shirts are available for sale for $20. They have the slogan “Life After Carbon? – ask yourself how” and Transition The Grove on them. If you want one there’ll be some for sale at the Festival or better still order one directly so we can ensure there is one in your size. (administrator@transitionthegrove.org.au) Pay when you pick it up.

Cheers

Transition The Grove Banner
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

This Sunday 1 May is the inaugural National Permaculture Day. While we can all do something to celebrate it Northey Street City Farm has a big program of events planned and all are welcome. The calendar for the day is on their home page.

They also offer a lot of Permaculture courses.

Permaculture is a design system for creating sustainable human environments. It is about designing households and communities that are productive sustaining and largely self reliant and have minimal impact on the environment.

National Permaculture Day – Sunday 1st May is a day where a range of Permaculture events occur across Australia. Open homes gardens and farms films educational workshops permablitzes and a host of other activities provide an opportunity for the public to see positive Permaculture projects in action to talk personally to the people living it and experience the Permaculture movement first hand.

Last year thousands flocked to discover what Permaculture is all about to see home gardens and to find answers or solutions to problems. This year promises to be even bigger and better with many more homes gardens and workshops on show.
What’s on at Northey Street City Farm?

At our very own Northey Street City Farm we’re hosting a range of exciting activities to get you in the “permaculture spirit”. Community Garden Meeting 28th May

Transition The Grove Banner
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

The Community Garden is definitely off and running – the vision is growing.

Just had a chat to Zeki Murad who is the President of the newly formed Hills District Community Garden Group (which is not quite the name we’d have chosen but it does provide for membership from right across the upper Kedron Brook valley). Jo Barkworth is its Secretary.

The first project is going to be at the Patricks Rd State School and more sites are already being explored including a big site in Upper Kedron.

Funding and support for equipment will also be sought.

Talks are underway with both Cr Brian Battersby and Cr Andrew Wines.

The group already has three people with horticulture qualifications and a Permaculture designer as members keen to share.

If you want to be involved come along to the next meeting which will be happening at 8:30am next Saturday 28th May at the Patricks Rd State School near the Prep School.

The main focus will be on investigating the site that the School has made available. Patricks Rd State School’s P&C are giving excellent support to estalish the garden at the School. It is also a good model for how this can be done as a joint project between the community and a school. They will provide insurance cover for the project in the School grounds.

The meeting is also to consider things like what plants we can use in the garden how much soil we need (Steve Jones has generously offered support with providing soil for it – it will probably be to fill several long waist-high garden ‘tanks’ that are already available there).

The garden group will have access to a shed to use so we can set ourselves up with a kettle and the makings of tea/coffee etc.

It is expected the meeting will last about an hour and a half.

Come along and meet everyone. This is a practical project and we will be looking forward to working and learning and growing together.

Morning tea will be available.

This community garden activity is an excellent example of what Transition The Grove seeks to support in local community development – we want to facilitate such activities happening in every way we can locally.

So once again the details of the meeting:

8:30am Saturday 28th May at Patricks Rd State School at the Prep School.

Hope to see you there

The Grove – Sustainability Film Festival

Transition The Grove Banner
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

I have been directing my attention to the Energy group as a community outreach initiative. There is a lot of confusion and misinformation about renewable energy ‘out there’ and I think we can engage with the community on the basis of helping them make better informed decisions.

The focal point of this strategy is a mini Energy Expo to be held at Ferny Grove State High School including exhibitors and guest speakers on alternative energy. Planning for this event has established early March 2012 as the preferred date. Planning continues but the event horizon has moved.

In pondering an alternative community outreach initiative for 2011 I am suggesting a Sustainability Film Festival. This would be a series of (say) four films promoting sustainable practices shown over four nights. The advantage of this approach is that we can promote it heavily as a single event but spread it across several nights so that people who cannot come on one night may be able to come others.

Suggested DVDs are Food Inc End of the Line GasLand and FLOW. These have all been shown at various other transition or sustainability events we have attended and we should be able to borrow most of them from within the Transition community. If not they are available from the ABC on-line shop (follow the links above for details about each film). Note that there is a lead time on some of these if they are not currently in stock.

Promotion could be through schools churches sporting and other clubs via  their newsletters; by letterbox drops; posters on community notice-boards; and by advertising in The Hills Echo.

The Hills Echo has the longest lead time. If we meet the advertising deadline of 1 July distribution starts 15 July so the first event would have to be after 20th July at the earliest. Similar deadlines apply to August. School holidays start on 17 September.

This email is just going to members of the management committee to start the thinking process. I will check availability of DVDs with members of other Transition groups at our meeting tonight. Hope to see you there!

There will obviously be some expense involved but it is not yet possible to establish a budget. I will work on this over the next couple of weeks if the committee approves the idea in principle.  I would also like to send an email similar to this to registered members of The Grove to see who is available to help out in various ways and to get feedback on preferred dates.

Questions comments suggestions and other feedback appreciated….

Cheers

John Tennock

Dear {usertag:name}

Proposal for equipment for stalls such as Arana AusFest –

Can we get 2 Vacuum Pumps for Festivals and Market Stalls and Meetings so we can have water for tea and coffee available for volunteers and anyone else as seems appropriate?

Volunteers will be at Arana AusFest this Saturday 9th October from noon until 7pm so it would be good if we could have them for then so that volunteers are looked after.

Prices for Thermos Vacuum Insulated Pump-pots 1.9 litre at Kmart Arana is $45.00 each.

Price for 2 = $90.00

Voting Closes 6:00pm Wednesday 6 October 2010 (To allow time to purchase the items before Saturday)

ATA – solar panels

Transition The Grove Banner
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

Something for you all to consider.
The University of Qld are auctioning off all their solar panels which were affected by the floods.  Each panel is 1.0 x 1.6 meters and can produce 240W.  They are “Trina” brand and retail for $500 in the US which I am told is a very good price.  Auction price is expected to be a lot lower than that.  There are a few thousand of them plus about 60 x 12kW inverters.  D’s thoughts were that we might be able to make a bulk bid if we knew how many member wanted some panels.  If you could give this some thought over the next 24 hours so we can discus it at tomorrow night’s meeting.  Someone will be at the hall from 6:00pm so we can talk about this before and after our guest speaker.  The auction is next Tuesday so there isn’t much time as this weekend is another long one.  D will try to glean as much information as possible for the meeting.  Hopefully those members with some solar panel experience will be able to attend tomorrow’s meeting and help others who might have any questions.
Regards
John Clark
ATA Brisbane Branch Convenor.
If you are interested you might like to come along to the ATA meeting at Albion Peace Hall tomorrow night (Thursday 28th April). They have a good guest speaker too.
