Report – Energy Group Meeting – 12 May

Transition The Grove - Energy Group
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

Our Energy Group meeting on 12 May stimulated some interesting discussion.

SEMP (Schools Environment Management Plan) Project

The plan for a mini-mini Energy Expo in cooperation with Ferny Grove State High School was discussed. Reporting back from various meetings this would be planned to take place after 28 November. Transition The Grove can contribute by sourcing local exhibitors organising expert guest speakers and promoting the event in the community.

Video – Dave Meslin

Are people apathetic or is the challenge for us to find effective methods of communication leadership and influence? We viewed a 7-minute TED-Talk video which you can review here.

Design Concepts

At the previous meeting we agreed that it is important to have a presence at as many local markets festivals and other community events as possible. Clare has come up with some excellent designs for T-Shirts that would greatly increase our visibility at these events. The process of choosing a design and getting T-Shirts printed is in progress. More on this later…

Convergence Solutions

At the previous meeting Peter offered to prepare a commercial option to solve the issue of the 100% Green energy for the 35000 house holds and businesses in our valley. he presented and innovative solution. You can see a summary of it here.

The next energy group meeting will be 9 June (2nd Thursday each month) at the Ferny Grove State High School library. I hope to see you there.

Cheers

John Tennock

Audit of local park facilities

Transition The Grove Banner
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

Would you be able to help review your local park playground and picnic ground facilities. If we all take note when we are out and about and pool the information it can be easy and fun and come up with good informatio.

There are 2 aspects to record:

  • Exactly what facilities are provided
  • Condition of the facilities (excellent good dilapidated dirty)

The facilities to make a record of are:

  • Public toilets (are they open or locked also; what about disabled access)
  • Picnic shelters
  • Lighting
  • Parking
  • Music bowls
  • Tables and seating
  • Benches for seating
  • BBQs (in useable order)
  • Children’s play equipment
  • Basketball hoops
  • Cricket practice nets
  • Large grassed areas
  • Fenced in dog off-leash areas
  • Drinking fountains (do they have a separate tap for filling water bottles; for dogs to drink)
  • Rubbish bins
  • Look-out facilities (platforms viewing)
  • Signs telling about local features and wildlife
  • Walking / cycling tracks
  • Skatebowls
  • Tennis hit-up walls
  • Close to public transport
  • Water features (lake brook …)

If you are able to spare some time either make a note and bring it along to a meeting sometime or send it through directly using the Contact Us email link on the website and it can be added straight in. Or put it on the Facilities Forum on the website (it can be pooled together and tidied up later).

The parks and picnic and playground areas we are aware of are listed below but if you find others good on you and do send through the details! You might like to confirm the name and locations given and alert any that need changing.

Hands & Heart – Twilight Market Transition The Grove Stall

Transition The Grove Banner
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

Ferny Grove State School will stage a twilight market from 5pm on November 25th.

They want to involve local community groups. This is an ideal event for Transition The Grove to have a stall at the twilight market.

We own a marquee two tables a banner… Transition The Grove t-shirts and badges…

You are part of either (or both) The Heart and The Hands Subgroup.

Would you be available to develop ideas for the stall and make it a happy place telling the Transition story to the local community?

This is an opportunity to come up with something delightful and to work together with and get to know fellow members.

If you would enjoy being part of it drop a short email reply to this Newsletter and we’ll put you in touch with each other to get on with it.

Cheers

Soils are alive conference transcript

Dear {usertag:name}

I was fortunate enough to attend the Soils Are Alive conference last weekend. The transcript notes I took at the conference are available on the website under the Food and Gardening Forum.

Key insights are the role of mycorrhyzal fungi in soil and in building soil carbon and nutrition. The earthworm and dung beetle talks were fun. The ratio of Nitrogen to Carbon also an interesting insight.

Soil our foundation asset for so much.

To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

This e-newsletter is being sent to the 48 members of the Environment Subgroup.

This weekend there is an exciting opportunity to be actively involved in a survey of the fish in Kedron Brook. This is part of the wildlife management programs and creek health that our Kedron Brook Catchment Group and Creek Ranger are continuously involved in.

Here is the email about it. If you are able to come along and take part email Jacinta Hamilton to get a copy of the Fish Snap Shot procedures and so that she can plan the numbers for the day.

jacinta.hamilton@brisbane.qld.gov.au

Thank you for showing interest in joining in with our Fish Snap Shot program.  This weekend we will be assessing 3 sites along Kedron Brook.  The details are as follows:

Saturday 24th March – 8am – Meet at Arana Hills Leagues Club Car Park 247 Dawson Parade  Keperra – UBD ref Map 118 E20

Saturday 24th March – (after Dawsons Parade) – meet at Keperra Golf Club 44 Duggan Street  Keperra – UBD ref Map 138 B5

Sunday 25th March – 8am – Meet at Grinstead Park Shand Street Alderley – UBD ref Map 139 D8

Attached is a copy of the Fish Snap Shot procedures for your information so you are aware of what is involved on the day.  We will be using a Horiba for water quality testing which is in the process of being calibrated this week for more accurate results.

All equipment will be there on the days so just make sure you wear what’s appropriate for the sun:

hat sunscreen collared top enclosed shoes.

If you are happy to get wet on the day as we do wade through water that can be waist deep wear clothes that you are happy to get wet in.  We do have wet shoes for all sizes however if you do have shoes that you prefer to wear please make sure that they are enclosed.

Also:

insect repellant

a bottle of water

something to snack on

Otherwise everything else will be available to you on the day.

In the meantime please feel free to pass on the information to anyone that you think may be interested in joining us as the more hands on the day (and knowledge) the better.

Welcome new member – Lesley Given

Transition The Grove Banner
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

Please welcome new member Lesley Given. Lesley has joined the Food & Gardening Environment Education and Local History Subgroups.

Lesley has been a teacher for many years and has just retired so is interested in doing something locally.

Food & Gardening Environment and Education are large subgroups. Local History already has a good number of locals who have indicated an interest. We encourage you to go to the Groups Tab and have a look at who is in these groups. Use this facility to start making contact.

We can provide some of the initiative and energy to get things started but it will really take off when people in the groups take some initiative themselves and decide to organise gettogethers and start discussions and project ideas. Everything is there for you to ‘just do it’! The Groups are a fantastic way of immediately being put in touch with a large group of local people who have indicated they share an interest in the topic. Take it from there! Get creative and make things happen! Three don’ts: Don’t sell. Don’t push a political party line. Don’t evangalize.

We are very keen to see natural leaders emerge around any of the subgroups and when this happens they can be facilitated to coordinate the subgroup.

We do encourage all members to tell their friends about Transition The Grove and encourage them to join if they live locally (in 4054 or 4055) or are making a significant contribution to life in this valley.

We get a steady stream of membership applications that cannot be approved. These include applications that do not include a surname. Membership is not anonymous – we are all people with strong local links and we are about building a local community of people who recognise and know each other. While very careful controls are put on privacy we do not accept people whose bona fides cannot be verified. We also get quite a lot of applications from people who live elsewhere who have come across the website and are interested in the ideas. It is unusual to have a group so carefully restricted to people who live or have a strong local involvement. We often direct them to the Transition Town for their area or even suggest they start one if we know there is enough interest in the area they live in. Transition Towns are involved in helping each other get established in their own local areas.

We work closely with Transition The Gap (in The Gap) and Transition Enoggera (4053 4052 – Mitchelton Gaythorne Enoggera). We’re also keen to support a new Transition Initiative in the Downfall Creek area from Everton Hills down the catchment.

Best wishes

Welcome New Member – Susan Scott

Transition The Grove Banner
  To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

This e-newsletter is going to members of the Food & Gardening Environment and Facilities Subgroups.

Welcome new member Susan Scott from Keperra.

Food & Gardening news: The Hills District Community Garden Group who we work closely with had its AGM recently. President Jonathan is meeting with Cr Andrew Wines to discuss our proposal for a community garden locally.  Cr Brian Battersby is supportive and is looking for somewhere for us to have a garden too.

The children’s garden at All Saints Anglican Church is progressing well.

Grovely TAFE – the main location for horticulture training in the north of Brisbane and a place where great organic gardening courses are held – is under direct threat of being closed down mid-2013 (also Ithaca TAFE). We are very concerned about this. It is a major Food Security issue.

Have you had a look at brisbanelocalfood.ning.com ? It is a great website with heaps of gardening workshops. I’m going to one on Sat 3rd November 3pm on composting and worm tower construction at Deception Bay if anyone wants to come and share a vehicle. It is free. Give me a ring if you want to come (3851 1016).

The current Organic Gardening course at Grovely TAFE under the tutelage of Adrian Holbeck of BOGI is going excellently. Lots of plants getting propagated and soil tested and built and great fun being had.

Margaret Burman the Manager at the Ferny Grove Shopping Village is a local wonder. She’s applied for some funds for small workshops for youth during school holidays at the shopping centre. There will be one on setting up a Permaculture garden box and one on setting up a worm farm. If you have teenagers who’d like to participate get in early.

You should probably also be aware of the Food Relief Network that Deb Blakely coordinates in this region. There are regular meetings with representatives from quite a range of local groups who contribute food in one way or another.

Environment: Northern Rivers Catchment Group and Kedron Brook Catchment Group both active. We do what we can to support them and encourage any of our members who are interested in the environment to join them and get involved. They have great seminars coordinate local bushcare and do wildlife surveys which are well worth being part of.

Anyone interested in coming along to climate change seminar at Griffith Uni Thursday 29 November 6-8pm at the EcoCentre Nathan Campus we will be happy to car-share. These seminars are excellent and the people who attend are great to talk to over supper (5:30pm).  Tje next seminar is on climate change adaptation for human settlements in South East Queensland.  RSVP to Lisa Malcolm at l.malcolm@griffith.edu.au if you want to come and if you want to car-share ring us on 3851 1016.

Facilities: The potential loss of the excellent Grovely TAFE facility is probably the most significant local news.

The Ferny Grove Shopping Village is a good news story – Margarent has been getting music performances happening. She got a big mural painted by Ferny Grove High School Students. She’s offered us the use of one of the vacant shops to run seminars and workshops in (I’m thinking about doing wellness groups).

Cheers for now and welcome Susan.

Welcome New Member Anthony Smith of Club Arana

Transition The Grove Banner
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

Welcome new member Anthony Smith of Club Arana on Dawson Parade Arana Hills. Anthony has joined the Recreation and Health Subgroups.

Club Arana is one of our local gyms / fitness centres. They hold a lot of classes (Reebok Step Pump Body Attack Pilates Zumba RPM Yoga and swimming lessons for children) and there are huge gyms there as well as a heated pool (32degrees).

Anthony joins our growing list of local health and fitness professionals who are members of Transition The Grove.

I attended the Health & Diabetes Expo in The Gap on the weekend. Terrific. Organised by a Ferny Grove local!Let’s bring it home to our hills and valley here.

She says the top outcome has been getting local health and fitness professionals knowing each other on first name terms and working together. This is on-going.  The professional coordination and cooperation between all the locals who are part of the network helping our community be fit and healthy is a powerful asset. Let’s build it here together.

Here are some links to fitness and gyms on the Transition The Grove website.

I do encourage you to make them ‘your place’ and add posts to the Forum.(You will need to Log In first for the New Thread tab to appear) Create a presence. Post to multiple categories.

If you want to add to or delete or change information on the Community Directory send us a Contact Us email with the details – it has to be done from the administrative end. You can edit any posts you make to the Forums and to the Community Calendar but not other people’s. If you think something is incorrect or inappropriate do let us know promptly so that it can be made better. This community tool is as good as we all make it.

And if you have classes and events happening how about putting them on the Community Calendar so people can find them and know about them.

(There is a problem with Windows 7 and Internet Explorer 9 together for uploading a new event. If you have this combination we suggest you download Google Chrome – free & quick and easy to download and install and it works fine to overcome the problem).

Do encourage your customers to visit the site check the Calendar and also to Join and add their own LOCAL information.

Remember this website is strictly local and membership is strictly for locals.

Let’s make this the fittest healthiest community in Australia! And let’s have terrific fun being involved in local recreation.

Remember also that the purpose of the Subgroups is for people who want to be actively involved as distinct from passive recipients. This is going to be as good as the effort of those who see the potential and get actively involved make it.

Cheers
