Dear {usertag:name}

This e-newsletter is being sent to the Food & Gardening Transport Environment Education Energy Building & Construction The Head and Towards Zero Waste Subgroups.

Welcome new member Kyle Bush.

Kyle writes: I am a recent graduate of Architecture at QUT and currently teach design there in a couple of disciplines. I have traveled and lived overseas for over a year and have been lucky enough to study sustainability and be involved in aid projects in Africa and building projects which looked at the use of waste material in construction in the UK. I am currently studying a Permaculture Design Course at Northey Street City Farm and am working toward transforming a post war home in Keperra into a productive climatically responsive dwelling using primarily found scavenged and reclaimed materials with the aim of making it an exemplar of sustainable residential design to be used for educational purposes. I am also a hobby photographer and have a couple of exhibitions lined up for this year one of which will be in Grub St Cafe on Samford Rd.

He also has a local business: Humble Be Workshop www.humblebe.net.au

Kyle and anyone else who isn’t yet aware of it we are in the process of preparing for the Ferny Grove Festival on Saturday 28th (noon to 4pm) at the Ferny Grove State School.  Transition The Grove will be there with a 3-marquee area of displays and activities.  The more of you who come along and spend some time in the marquee the better.

There are heaps of ways you can get involved.  If you would like to send an email to eventplanning@transitionthegrove.org.au

One of the great things about the Transition The Grove joining process is that it is a way for people who would never otherwise have met to find each other to find people of shared interests and values. There are some remarkable people among the members.

Remember this association is not so much led as providing an opportunity for you to start something that you are passionate about for the local suburbs of Upper Kedron Ferny Grove Keperra Ferny Hills and Arana Hills. We are about building a resilient future and a vibrant community here together.

Don’t be slow about asking how you can start to take initiatives that you want to happen or to be put in touch with others locally with shared interests. The Groups tab now has good lists.

We are gradually exploring using group emails (the eventplanning is one such). It seems to take a bit of learning. Anyone can start sending one and it always goes to the whole group replies too. No-one owns the process – it is a local group of people making it happen and sharing their ideas and energy together. As I said: It takes a bit of learning but we’ll all gradually get there. And we don’t want to flood Inboxes. No-one likes that.

Remember the 28th.

All the best

Welcome New Member Ingrid Cliff

Dear {usertag:name}

Welcome new member Ingrid Cliff. Ingrid says: I run a copywriting business based in The Hills but with clients around the clients around the world. A few years through the local Chamber of Commerce I discovered the strong vibrant community within the Hills – I wouldn’t live anywhere else!

She has nominated Recreation Health Business & Finance Building & Construction Governance The Head The Heart and Community Cultural Values subgroups.

Ingrid why don’t you go to the Business Forum on Transition The Grove’s website and add a thread about what your business does. Remember – no marketing. Stick to factual information so we know you are there and what your service is so this community can call on it when they need to.

It would also be good to have regular input on The Hills Chamber of Commerce activities so the local community can hear more about this great local group. There is a Forum link for it too.

Remember the Transition The Grove  website has tools for you to use to communicate locally. You don’t need permission – now you are registered just start using them. You can add events to the Community Calendar. You can organise local events and communicate with other registered locals who have indicated they share the interest (through the Groups tab). You can contribute to the store of local information through the Forums or raise local concerns.

All the best

Welcome new member – Kellie Walden

To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

Please welcome new member Kellie Walden. Kellie has joined the Food & Gardening Recreation Transport Health Environment Education Facilities and Community Cultural Values Subgroups.

Kellie is currently Acting Centre Manager of SIENA Learning and Leisure Service which is a transitional program that caters to people with intellectual disabilities with low support needs who want to learn new skills and continue to grow and develop. The centre is located in Arana Hills.

We did a radio interview about SIENA recently on Radio YYY 87.6 FM for the Transition The Grove Hour. Have a listen – you can download it from the link on www.transitionthegrove.org.au  This organisation is very valuable to have in our area.

While we’re on the topic of Food & Gardening be aware that a lot of progress is being made in getting approval for a Community Garden site with BCC through The Hills District Community Garden Group Inc. This group is taking on the role of organising and coordinating a community garden for all the suburbs in this valley so any Transition The Grove Food & Gardening Subgroup members who want to get involved in a community garden we are encouraging you to follow this up. They are also organising a smaller garden at the Patricks Rd State School Preschool. There is considerable overlap in our memberships – get in touch with Jo Barkworth or Zeki Murad for starters through the Groups tab.

SIENA is another key centre for local learning which is so important. We hope they will announce some of the training they do in Transition The Grove’s Community Calendar.

Warm regards

Approval for expenditure on web-site

Transition The Grove Banner
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

Transition The Grove Management Committee

I would like management committee approval for the following proposal to increase the capacity of our web-site to meet emerging needs.

1. We are currently on a plan ($12 per month paid annually $144). For the last few months our website has exceeded our 2000 Mb monthly traffic allowance (bandwidth). When this happens the web-site becomes unavailable and returns an error message to visitors. To avoid this we have been temporarily increasing the allowance at our own expense until the end of the month and then reducing it again. This month the allocation was exceeded today (13 March) so there is still a lot of month to go.

I think we should permanently increase our monthly traffic allowance to 15000 Mb which would increase the cost to $19 per month ($228 paid annually) an increase of $84 per year.

2. In addition to this normal mainly text-based traffic the opportunity to do a regular weekly program on local radio YYY 87.6FM creates a large volume of audio. It takes considerable effort to prepare each week’s program so there is real value in being able to store it and make it available to listen on-line at any time. Our present hosting service is not the appropriate place to do this. They charge higher rates consistent with their higher level of service. Hosting large audio files needs a ‘warehouse’ rather than a ‘retail store’.

We have temporarily ‘borrowed’ some ‘free’ space on the hosting service my son uses but this is not a satisfactory long-term solution.

We have now located a suitable data storage warehouse and tested it by purchasing one month at our own expense. It works extremely well. It is quick and efficient to load download or listen to audio.

I think we should use this service for $78 annually for 100Gb of storage capacity and 100Gb of monthly traffic. (100Gb = 100000Mb).

Hopefully this explanation is sufficient. Would you please therefore vote here to approve additional web-site expenditure of $84 + $78 = $162 annually. Please contact me if you require more information.

Please note also that we have just received $2000 from Asperger Services for web-site services rendered.

Regards

John Tennock

Welcome New Member – Elizabeth Mills

Transition The Grove Banner
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

Welcome new member Elizabeth Mills who has nominated the Food & Gardening Health Environment Education The Heart and The Head Interest Subgroups.

Elizabeth says: I enjoy gardening walking and meeting with people and to keep my mind active! I have a small business specialising in personal and family counselling.

I hope you will all put on your thinking caps about what you want to achieve for Transition Towns in 2012. This is an ideal time to review what has been happening so far and come up with some priorities for what we want to achieve in various interest areas this year.

Seeing as how it is such a pleasant time of the year for things like BBQs we thought it might be good to get together and throw ideas around while relaxing and socialising.

Right now I’m in the middle of getting the weekly Transition The Grove Hour together for local Radio YYY 87.6 FM (which is podcast on their website at www.yyyfm.org.au). If any of you have any ideas you would like to get to air do let me know. Or you might like to be interviewed on a theme. Or you might like to do an interview!

Looking forward to having a constructive and enjoyable 2012 in The Grove!

Dear {usertag:name}

This e-newsletter is being sent to members of the Food & Gardening Health Recreation Environment Energy Water and Towards Zero Waste Subgroups.

Welcome new member Jan Nixon-Smith.  Jan’s business is Keperra Bowen Therapy Clinic.

It was great to see many of you there at the Healthy Lifestyles Expo on Saturday last. Did you notice stallholders with Transition The Grove badges? We handed out a lot on the day.

The next important local gathering that Transition The Grove is supporting is the Community Garden Information Day this coming Saturday 23rd June from 11am to 1pm at Julatten Park off Upper Kedron Rd (and also off Strathmere Place) Upper Kedron. The site for the garden is at the back of the park.

Also on the same Saturday there are several local Environment activities happening in the MacGregor Way park which is having a major beautification.

We are also in the process of planning a series of 6 different Saturday morning Walks by Local Water. This will be a Water Subgroup activity. Not long or difficult but quite lovely especially at this time of year.

The Energy Subgroup regular meeting is on the 1st Thursday of the month at 7pm at the Ferny Grove State High School Resource Centre.

Warm regards

Community Garden – Meeting Reminder

Transition The Grove Banner
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

A reminder for anyone who is interested in being part of a community garden that this meeting is happening on Monday afternoon. Some approvals have already been given by the school for a garden there and the opportunity is there for you to be part of helping it get established.
Community garden first steering group meeting
When:
28/03/2011 04:00 PM
Where:
Patricks Rd State Pre-School – Ferny Hills- in the pre-school grounds.
Schools are starting to look like a good place for gardens – it also has advantages for the schools as they are not easily able to afford grounds’ staff to keep all the gardens thriving and having vege-herb gardens is a good example for the children.
I hope that you will be able to attend this meeting and that it proves productive.
Regards
Anne

Dear {usertag:name}

We’ve received notice of the following community forum and hope that some of you will be able to come along. Transition Towns are after all about planning for our community future and this is a chance to think broadly across the issues both locally and at a state level and into a long-term timeframe. Quite challenging but definitely worthwhile.

We hope to see you there.
