Topic:- Containing The Human Footprint – A Social or Technological Challenge?

ATA’s first guest speaker for 2012 is Dr. Jane O’Sullivan from the University of Queensland and she will speak on the aforementioned topic.

Several decades ago Paul Ehrlich developed the IPAT formula: Environmental Impact = Population x Affluence x Technology. Although never an adequate explanation of humanity’s ecological role its central message is relevant yet still widely denied. To manage human impact we need to manage all three factors and recognise the interplay between them.

Jane O’Sullivan is a member of the national executive of Sustainable Population Australia and President of its Queensland branch. She is also a climate change activist and has represented SPA at International Climate Change conferences. She has a particular interest in the economic implications of population growth.

During Jane’s talk she will explore the opportunity cost of absorbing technological improvements with population growth and the synergy when population growth reduction magnifies the benefit of technological and behavioural change.

This should prove to be a very interesting evening and a great topic of conversation stimulated even more by questions from members and guests. Jane will definitely be a speaker not to be missed.

Guests will be made more than welcome. You don’t need to be a member of ATA. Light refreshments will be served after the meeting where further debate is generally the order of the day over a cup of tea or coffee.

Committee meeting from 6.30pm all welcome.

Kind regards
John Clark
Convenor ATA Brisbane Branch
