Dear {usertag:name}

Welcome new member Leendert van Ingen Schenau. Len says: I am originally from Amsterdam but lived in Australia for 40 years. I am a GP with an interest in preventive health. He is the Chair of the North West (Health) Community Consultative Committee.

Len has joined the Health Environment Education Energy Water Governance Local History Towards Zero Waste The Head and The Heart Subgroups.

Local health in our region is starting to get very exciting. We have excellent support from the Health Promotions Team of QLD Health for this region for getting local healthy lifestyles projects going. This will be starting small and has the potential to develop into a truly excellent health venture for the suburbs in The Grove.

The Community Consultative Committees have already been identified as key components in the new Medicare Locals that the Federal Government has established.

Some members of the Health Subgroup will be meeting at the Banksia Healing Centre 92 Illuta Avenue Ferny Hills this coming Monday morning from 9am-10am as part of the process of getting to work and plan together about local health. Members of the Health Subgroup who are available to attend at that time are welcome – please call 3851 1016.

Two elections are  coming up. Transition The Grove is strictly non-party-political. We can be helpful locally in making sure that the local candidates are known and what the different positions are on the issues that are important locally here. We have members from the main political parties as Transition The Grove members and wish them all all the best in their campaigns.Transition The Grove’s Governance Forum is a good place to hold discussions on what you think important local issues are. The discussion will be moderated. There is a Report to Moderator button when you are logged on if you are concerned about any post.

Transition The Grove missed out on getting the Clean Up Australia Day site at Leslie Patrick Park this year – so we have decided to support the organiser who got in before us! 4th March 8am-10am at Leslie Patrick Park on Dawson Parade. This is a chance for as many of us as possible from the Towards Zero Waste Subgroup to get out and put our actions where our values are.

Warm regards

Energy Sub-group Meeting 3 May

Transition The Grove - Energy Group
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

Please come along to a review/planning meeting this Thursday 3 May (1st Thursday) at the Ferny Grove State High School library.

A great deal of effort and planning went into our proposed display at the Ferny Grove Festival on Saturday and it was unfortunate that we had to pull out at the last minute due to extreme weather.

Now would be a good time to capture the ideas and the learning that arose from that project and start planning what activities we can now focus on to engage our local community in reducing our collctive carbon footprint.

Transition The Grove – Energy Group Planning meeting
When: Thursday 3 May – 7:00 pm
Where: Ferny Grove State High School Library – McGinn Road
Bring: Ideas
Cost – FREE! – Supper included. Gold coin donation appreciated.

I hope you can make it.

Cheers

John Tennock

Welcome New Member

Dear {usertag:name}

Please welcome new member Cynthia Jones to the Food & Gardening Health and Heart subgroups. Cynthia moved here two years ago. She is renovating her old home and making a faerie garden.

The Hills Carnivale is coming up next month and will be a chance for Transition The Grove to be present. There is going to be a Grand Parade around the oval which could be great fun to be part of. How many symbols of transitioning to a resilient local lifestyle can we think of? (Solar panels wheelbarrows full of home-grown veges bicycles some healthy lifestyle stuff some local environment stuff but a lot of heart/ fun stuff would be good. Maybe something to remind us of all the things we take for granted that are made out of oil?) Anyone who can help and come up with some simple fun ideas start planning now.

Warm regards

Transition the Grove – Energy Group Activation.

To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

You are receiving this email because you indicated ‘Energy’ as one of your interests when you registered on the Transition The Grove web-site.

I have been mulling this over for some time and it now seems timely to get discussion and action going on this subject. Hopefully this will lead to a group project to reduce our fossil based energy consumption.

Why now?

  1. Our information booth at Arana Ausfest (Saturday 9 October) will have greater relevance to visitors if both the Energy and the Food & Gardens group (and maybe some others as well) are activated and ready to engage with new members.
  2. It seems likely that the government will finally have no choice but to implement a carbon price which will give more certainty to the Alternative Energy sector increasing the uptake of small scale alternative energy solutions.
  3. eyond Zero Emissions have invested an enormous amount of (mostly pro bono) professional effort in preparing the Zero Carbon Australia Stationary Energy Plan a (170 page) detailed and costed blueprint for transitioning Australia’s stationary energy sector to 100% renewable energy in ten years. The Brisbane launch on 27 October is bound to stimulate productive discussion.
  4. Looking around The Grove there are increasing numbers of homes with solar panels. This represents a valuable accumulation of community knowledge and experience in small scale solar energy. Transition The Grove may be able to consolidate this knowledge to help prospective adopters of alternative energy solutions avoid some of the pitfalls.

Action?

  • Join in the Energy discussion forum and share your ideas and enthusiasms.
  • Come and spend some time ‘connecting’ with people at Arana Ausfest on 27 October

Cheers

World Environment Day picnic 5th June

Transition The Grove Banner

Dear {usertag:name}

This e-newsletter is being sent to the Environment Subgroup.

Short notice but there is still time! A picnic together in a lovely part of our local environment.

If you’re free at lunchtime tomorrow (World Environment Day Tuesday 5th June) come along to Lomandra Park on Samford Rd Ferny Hills (opposite side of Samford Rd from the tennis courts) for a picnic in the park together with others from the Environment Subgroup.

We’ll aim for noon and have hot water/tea/coffee stuff there. There is a BBQ if you want to cook. Bring your own food and if you want to bring something to share that would be great.

The Environment starts with getting into it!  Kedron Brook will be flowing well and we can walk down to the bridge and the lagoon and have a look at it. I’ll bring some picker-uppers and a bag to collect any rubbish we find on the way. If we have any bird-watchers they could help identify the birds there.

Focus question to think about for World Environment Day:

  • What is important to us about the environment in the upper Kedron Brook Cedar Creek and Cabbage Tree Creek catchments?

Please would you also let locals in your networks know this picnic is happening and invite them to come along if they are free.

AngliGreen is also organising a World Environment Day theme at All Saints Anglican Church this coming Sunday.

If  you know of any other World Environment Day activities happening locally could you let me know at administrator@transitionthegrove.org.au or put them directly on the Events list yourself please.

Cheers

We’re very keen to get the Community Calendar listing all the local recreation classes and activities.  Remember you can list recurring events such as classes there too. Use the Recurring function and just put in the date of the first class. If you need some help to learn how to Add Events contact us and we’re happy to talk you through it.

Storytelling event this Monday – invitation

Transition The Grove Banner
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

This coming Monday evening 29th August we are having a gathering of the learning circle/think tank I belong to Hot Futures at our place in Ferny Grove.

The theme this week is story-telling narratives with a particular focus on the stories that lead us into the future. This is the second part in the narratives theme and the last one was so good we decided to continue on the same theme. We all had great stories to share.

The format is a short shared meal at 6:30pm then discussion is from 7pm-9pm. It will be led by two Hot Futures’ members Oscar and Adam.

Let me know if you would like to come along and participate and I’ll approach Oscar and Adam to formally invite you.  Time is short so I’d need you to get back to me by Saturday.

Warm regards
