PALLIATIVE CARE

Palliative Care is a vital part of a modern quality health care system. Unfortunately in Australia we still have a long way to go before that is a reality for all Australians but we do have an opportunity for some momentary applause.

As you may be aware in the last session of Parliament for 2010 I successfully moved a motion in the Senate calling for substantial improvements in our palliative care system.

It received bipartisan support and I recently had a letter thanking me for my efforts from Palliative Care Australia saying that our motion was described by the World Palliative Care Alliance as a “world first’.

My office also received this note of support:

Dear Senators
As a palliative care nurse I wish to convey my personal congratulations for the strong support you are demonstrating for the provision of modern quality palliative care for Australians. I am particularly delighted in your bipartisan support for this fundamental right. I offer my support to this important initiative.

But our campaign doesn’t stop there. I am preparing a Petition to present to Parliament calling for access to quality modern palliative care to be available to all Australians. I will let you know as soon as it is finalised and would appreciate your support to get it out to as many people as possible.
