Subgroup rules

Dear {usertag:name}

These are the clauses from the Constitution of Transition The Grove Inc that apply directly to Subgroups.

27 Initiation of sub-groups
(1) Sub-groups are listed on the association’s website.
(2) An active sub-group is one for which at least one member has registered for on the website or on a written membership application.
(3) Any member may join and participate in any sub-group. Members may join as many subgroups as they wish but are encouraged to be actively involved in any they join.
(4) To find out details of meetings of a sub-group members should look on the web-site and keep in contact the sub-group organizer.
(5) In the initial phase sub-group meetings are initiated by the sub-group organizer for active sub-groups.
(6) Once sub-groups start to generate their own momentum active sub-group members decide when and how they will meet.
(7) The sub-group organizer provides sub-groups with some support to keep meeting.

28 Business of sub-groups
(1) Sub-groups operate as the primary vehicles for discussion and developing ideas and proposals for the Energy Descent Action Plan (EDA) and for projects consistent with the association’s aims.
(2) Sub-groups are designed to cover a single domain of action. For example one sub-group may consider energy. Another sub-group may consider food with a current focus on community orchards and may later focus on local farms or another community garden at a site elsewhere in The Grove.
(3) Sub-groups use processes such as visioning to develop visions of a resilient future in their domain of action. They then consider this in relation to how systems work currently in their domain of action and how a transition might be achieved to move from the current system towards the envisaged future. As this is developed it is communicated to the management committee for inclusion in the EDAP for The Grove.
(4) Sub-groups submit projects related to achieving their vision for transition to the
management committee for approval (which involves considering whether they fall within the association’s aims and principles and what would be involved in progressing them to active funded projects meeting the broader requirements of local council state federal governments and insurance bodies.) Approved projects are recorded in the management committee minutes and the sub-group notified by email by the secretary.
(5) Sub-groups work with the management committee to seek funds and resources for approved projects.
(6) Sub-groups are also the primary locus for members to get to know each other well and to make friendships by meeting regularly and having discussions along with opportunities for social and enjoyable activity in friendly and pleasant environments.

29 Meetings of sub-groups
(1) Subject to rule 22 a sub-group meets as it considers appropriate. A sub-group may elect a facilitator for a meeting or may meet informally.
(2) Sub-groups may choose someone to be the main contact for the group.
(3) While sub-group discussion is available on the association’s website the primary
intention is that members meet regularly face-to-face.
(4) A question arising at a sub-group meeting is to be decided by ensuring all different positions held in the meeting are given a chance to be heard and worked through until options emerge that those actively participating in the discussions find common agreement with.
(5) Sub-group members are encouraged to contribute their ideas knowledge vision and passion to the sub-group discussions and also to raise any doubts or concerns they may have. It is expected that discussions in sub-groups will be rich and free flowing with members contributing their views and experience and learning from each other. Different processes may be explored.
(6) Sub-groups do not need to take minutes apart from recording attendance but if they make a submission to the management committee to go into the EDAP or for a project then it needs to be submitted in writing or by email.
(7) Sub-groups can make resolutions on any matters in their domain of action and direct the management committee to consider written resolutions and project proposals from the sub-group
(8) Sub-groups can select a representative to attend any meeting of the management committee to make a report on their progress for the EDAP and/or to present proposals.

(10) A representative of any sub-group can attend a meeting of the management committee to present a progress report for input into the EDAP and seek assistance with facilitating the sub-group’s project proposals.

22 Meetings of the association
A meeting of the association is a meeting of the management committee a community meeting a sub-group that has been established by the sub-group organizer the inaugural meeting an annual general meeting or a gathering approved by the management committee.
(1) Meetings may be held in any location within The Grove but not outside The Grove under the auspices of the association unless prior notification in writing or email of the meeting is provided to the secretary.
(2) If payment will be required for a meeting venue then approval must be obtained in advance from the management committee.
(3) A register of attendance must be completed at the commencement of a meeting. This should be given to the secretary for the record of association meetings.
(4) Meetings can include non-member residents of The Grove or invited guests from outside The Grove.
(5) All office-holders and members provide their services on a strictly voluntary basis
whenever they do anything as part of a meeting of the association unless otherwise
agreed in advance by the management committee.

(5) The sub-group organizer’s functions include but are not limited to-
(a) maintaining the register of current members of the association and their contact details
(b) checking that new members meet the requirements for membership and if they do then confirming their membership or if not providing the reason why not
(c) entering member’s current email addresses into an email list for the association
(d) maintaining a register of sub-groups that are active their brief and names and contact details for each sub-group and making members of sub-groups aware of each other’s contact details
(e) receiving recommendations for the EDAP and for projects and funding proposals from sub-groups to report to the management committee
(f) convening new sub-groups and arranging initial meetings and helping to get them
established
(g) providing a point of contact for members to find out about sub-groups they might be interested in joining.

Be the change you wish to see

Report on Transition The Grove Energy Subgroup meeting 10 March 2011

Transition The Grove - Energy Group
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

Report on Transition The Grove Energy Subgroup meeting 10 March 2011 at the Ferny Grove State High School library.

A transcript of the meeting is available (only) to registered logged-in Energy subgroup members here.

Fourteen attended the meeting which started with each attendee briefly introducing themselves to the group. A wide range of viewpoints was represented.

To ‘set the scene’ details were presented from some current campaigns which may have the potential to inform discussions about what we can do in The Grove to reduce our individual and community carbon footprints.

  1. 100% Renewables is a campaign aimed at gaining public support for government policy change to 100% renewable energy. One primary strategy adopted by this group is a door-to-door community survey. It would be possible for Transition the Grove to conduct a 100% Renewable survey in The Grove or to develop our own along the same lines. Chris Wright advised that on 30th March Luke Read of the 100% Renewables Campaign is coming to talk at Transition The Gap. Interested members from The Grove can attend to learn more about this campaign.

  2. Beyond Zero Emissions is a campaign aimed at addressing the technical and engineering issues with the goal of achieving 100% Renewables by 2020. John Tennock and Charles Neville recently attended a BZE training course and will be preparing to present talks on this subject in future. The recently published Stationary Energy Plan can be downloaded for free or a printed copy purchased from the BZE web-site. Work continues on further plans for transport (in progress) land use buildings industrial processes and replacing coal export revenue. We viewed a 6 minute introductory video that was used at the Queensland launch of this plan.

Some free ranging discussion followed including suggestions and ideas about things we can do locally. Peter Leith-Wybrow has a business www.appliedsolarwindsolutions.com.au that provides him with considerable experience and insight into ways to reduce energy consumption and ways to implement some innovative alternative (wind and solar) energy solutions.

The GreenStreet http://www.greenstreet.net.au/ project was discussed. This is a Pine Rivers Climate Action Network initiative to encourage residents to share ideas knowledge and achievements in reducing their personal carbon footprint. These results are consolidated into a progress report by Coutry State Suburb and Street. It might be possible for Energy Group members to explore this by signing up on the Green Street web-site with a view to promoting it to residents in The Grove.

The potential was discussed for participating with Ferny Grove State High School in a community partnership to help implement the School Environment Management Plan (SEMP). John Tennock is to attend a meeting of the FGSHS SEMP committee on 11 April.

One idea being considered is the possibility of Transition The Grove organising an “Energy Mini-Expo” at the school which could include expert speakers and displays by product vendors. This could be a valuable community outreach to families with children in the school and possibly families of feeder schools as well.

There followed some discussion summarised below around prompting questions:

1. How do we reach and connect with residents who are already concerned about their carbon footprint?

  • Use exiting networks (like schools churches community groups)

  • small posters in centres (shops libraries

  • Facebook

  • The Hills Echo

  • Get a photo of the group on the cover page.

  • Put it in North West News frequently. (Quest. They will put in any article that you pre-write especially with illustration.)

  • Philippa of The Western Echo regards their role as supporting non-profit groups. She’s more than willing to have ads put in and she rejigs for the paper. Send in Word format. They ran 2 for Transition The Gap on facing pages.

  • Keep an eye on the deadlines for the papers. Write 2 or 3 in advance.

  • Radio YYY 87.6 FM

2. How do we convince those who are not concerned that they should be?

  • To start with by “adjacency” – i.e. Convince their neighbors and let the message leak across.

  • Make information understandable to laymen; make connections between events and results.

  • Car stickers. Hand them out as well. Clare would be happy to design something. “I care about No Carbon”. Have available for sale in markets too.

  • Sharon knows someone who prints tee-shirts. Charles knows someone with a tee-shirt press in Enoggera. He works for Reverse Garbage.

  • Flyer targeting homes with panels on their roofs. Or water tanks. Or vege gardens.

3. What programs can we develop that local residents can apply to create actual reductions in carbon emissions?

  • First try and spin off existing programs (Fed State municipal)

4. What meaningful goals should we aim for to reduce energy consumption?

  • Percentage?

  • Any chance of getting ‘bigger consumption’ figures off Energex? i.e how much is a suburb using?

5. What meaningful goals should we aim for to convert to renewable energy sources?

  • How do you measure this. No good having a goal that can’t be measured.

6. How can we promote programs to achieve these goals?

  • Local newspapers

  • Let people know what’s happening what’s intended what’s achieved.

  • Again link to other groups that are moving forward to create a feeling of momentum.

It was agreed to set a monthly meeting date of the 2nd Thursday each month to develop plans further. Noted that we have a video night “In Transition 1.0” planned at the Arana Library and promoted through the Hills Echo on 14 April so the Energy Group will not be able to meet separately on that night. However it will be a good opportunity to learn more about Transition Towns.

Meantime the discussion can continue on the Transition the Grove – Energy and Fuel discussion forum. Action has already started on some of the above items.

Thanks to all who attended. I look forward to seeing everyone at the Arana Library on 14 April and joining in the discussion form where hopefully we can continue and expand the above topics.

Regards

John Tennock

Water Group – Horiba water quality testing workshop

Transition The Grove Banner
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

This e-newsletter is being sent to the Water Subgroup.  The information in it comes from the Kedrong Brook Cathment & Northern Catchment Network and Creek Rangers.

Hi Everyone

As some of you may already know KBCB & NCN have recently purchased a Horiba which will be available to borrow by our community groups Bushcare groups and Council employees.  However before making it available to lend out to anyone it is recommended that you attend training on the use of it and how to look after it as it is a very pricey piece of equipment.

So this Tuesday night 17th April Kedron Brook Catchment & Northern Catchment Network will be having a combined meeting with Nathaniel Parker from SEQ Catchments coming along to discuss water quality testing and the use of a Horiba.  He will be doing a 30min-1hour chat about the Horiba and will also be bringing a few in for us to practice with.

The meeting will be held at Downfall Creek Bushland Centre and will begin at 7.00pm with a few refreshments beforehand.

The equipment will be kept at Downfall Creek Bushland Centre and KBCB & NCN will be organising a policy for the use and care of it as well as a borrowing procedure – more of this will be discussed on the night.

Hopefully see some of you there on Tuesday.

Kind Regards
Jacinta

Dear {usertag:name}

Energy Group Meeting this Sunday

The Glideways in Ferny Grove meeting on Saturday 6 November was delightful. Martin from Geckoes Wildlife Presentations did a great job giving ‘hands-on’ education to both children and adults about the wildlife that lives around The Grove. His extensive menagerie included snakes lizards birds and marsupials. Naturally the star of the show was a cute Squirrel Glider. Everyone wanted to have a touch!

Sunday 14 NovemberTransition The Grove Energy Group

In November our regular monthly meeting will focus on discussion and planning for the Transition The Grove Energy Group. Community projects that might be considered are:

  • A Solar Panel ‘bulk-buy’ project.
  • A solar ‘mini expo’.
  • Educational seminars on renewable energy.
  • …other ideas not yet suggested?

One of the main aims of Transition Towns is to plan and implement a community based Energy Descent Action Plan (EDAP). To find out more here’s a link to the EDAP for Totnes (UK) one of the first Transition Towns.

We will also review the launch of the Zero Carbon Australia 2020 Stationary Energy Plan.

Date: Sunday 14 November 2010
Where: Arana Library
Cobbity Crescent
Arana Hills
Time: 4:00am to 6:00pm

If you are interested in reducing carbon emissions and energy consumption come along and share your ideas.

Community Gardens & welcome Justin Morrissey

Transition The Grove Banner

Dear {usertag:name}

This e-newsletter is being sent to members of the Food & Gardening Recreation Transport Business & Finance Environment Energy and Water subgroups.

Welcome new member Justin Morrissey. Justin is looking to create a community garden with others close to his house on Hakea St.

Justin you might like to have a look at the Community Garden section of the Forums on the Transition The Grove website.  The Hills District Community Garden Group is a good contact for you to know about. Jo Barkworth is the contact.

We went up to Yandina today to a workshop at their community garden on growing bananas. Lovely day. Fabulous communty garden – with aquaponics a propagation shed great chook yard community house potting area a bulk food cooperative and of course a very large permaculture garden with people busily engaged all over the place.  Now that would be nice to have here!

Ferny Grove Shopping Village wants a food garden along the McGinn Rd strip by the fence if anyone wants to be part of the project.

This is a very inspiring time to be involved in growing food – so much to harvest fresh and crisp if you have a food forest or vege garden or orchard. We’ve been away and visited the eco-community we are part of in NSW and were absolutely inspired by the magnificent vegetable gardens our 3 nearest neighbours have put in each about half an acre with extensive infrastructure and highly productive. They’ve done a lot of building the soil quality up to bursting with vitality and richness. On the home front we returned to find that we had every reason to be extremely grateful to one of our neighbours John who had watered our garden regularly here and it was thriving and full of flowers and veges ready to pick. We had to come back to look after another neighbour’s dog. But this is what it’s all about.

Well Justin we wish you well with your garden vision. You might like to put a post on the Community Garden Forum and if people want to get involved they could respond. Also remember the Food and Garden Groups link enables you to email people in the subgroup directly about what you have in mind.

All the best

Anne Tennock

Secretary

Category:Seminar

Description

State Library of Queensland Auditorium 1 level 2

Free.

Bookings: qtix.com.au  or 136 246

As we tackle climate change pollution and the need for renewable energy some argue geothermal energy is Australia’s answer. It’s a clean energy source able to generate base load electricity without burning fossil fuels or using nuclear reactors.

Join Michael Duggan in conversation with Director of Queensland Geothermal Energy Centre of excellence Professor Hal Gurgenci and Geodynamics’ Chief Scientist Dr Doone Wyborn as they discuss how geothermal energy is harnessed its limitations and what it will cost us both environmentally and economically.

We may see you there.
