The worldwide prevalence of obesity has doubled since 1980 a large epidemiological studies has concluded. Funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and published in The Lancet the studies identified by 2008 10% of all men and 14% of women were obese. Among high-income countries the increase in BMI was third highest in both Australian men (after the United States and New Zealand) and Australian women (after the United States and the United Kingdom).
