Helen Higgins: We brought this property in 1986. At the time we were surrounded by dairy and pig farms. No kerbing. We’ve seen surburbia creep towards us. We joined Land for Wildlife in 1989. She was concerned about the legal issues and also if we did all the wrong things would we get into trouble. And I can tell you we did lots of wrong things and they escaped. We also have a water course coming through here (we’re part of the Kedron Brook Catchment) – people like Robert Standish-White come out and help us. We’ve looked at problem areas like our dam and on occasion have been able to employ a bush regeneration person to come out and clean it up for us. Over the years we’ve been visited by wonderful Wildlife Officers like Cody and they are very forgiving about the things like ‘mother of millions’ that we got wrong. They are very forgiving. We were very interested to learn about the principles of wildlife management. The bees knees of books are Wildlife of Greater Brisbane. And Wild Plants of Greater Brisbane. Please take care walking around the property – it is soggy. We don’t have too many nasty snakes but we do have the odd spider.
