KEPERRA QLD 4 July 2013– More women than ever before soon will have the opportunity to access breast screening through BreastScreen Queensland.
Women aged between 50 and 74 will be able to have their screening performed by BreastScreen Queensland. Previously only women aged between 50 and 69 were eligible for the screening process.
Member for Ferny Grove Dale Shuttleworth said he welcomed the opportunity for even more women to access the services.
“Queensland recently has implemented a successful rollout of digital mammography technology across all BreastScreen Queensland services” Mr Shuttleworth said.
“We have also increased the number of fixed and mobile screening facilities to meet population growth in Queensland.
“These facilities will ensure that Queensland is well prepared to support the additional women who will have access to breast screening.”
Mr Shuttleworth said BreastScreen Queensland performed a vital service for Queensland women.
“BreastScreen Queensland aims to screen at least 70 per cent of women in the targeted age group every two years” he said.
“A breast screen is the best method available for detecting cancer early.
“If breast cancer is detected early there are increased treatment and management options.”
BreastScreen Queensland currently operates in more than 200 locations throughout Queensland including a satellite location at Northwest Community Health Centre 49 Corrigan Street Keperra.
A referral from your doctor is not required and the service is free.
The increased service will receive funding through the Federal Government’s National Partnership agreement on Expansion of the BreastScreen Australia Program.
Mr Shuttleworth encouraged women to contact BreastScreen Queensland on 13 20 50 if they had any further enquiries or to make an appointment.
