Children must be brought up with self-discipline and a good mental attitude.
Be optimistic – your attitude towards life plays an important part. Satisfaction with life is very important.
Resilience – an incredable sense of looking back and saying yes those things happened but they made me stronger.
Remain active. Whatever you do don’t sit and twiddle your thumbs!
Remain socially connected.
A sense of humour helps.
Choose your parents well! Your genes play an important part in the prevalence and age of onset of common diseases of ageing: dementia macular degeration heart disease and cancer
Attaining old age isn’t a case of declining health but avoiding disease – compression of morbidity. Staying healthy as you age is critical. The older you get the healthier you have been. Exert basic control over yourself. Don’t rush off and take medicines for minor complaints.
99% of participants in the Australian Study of Centenarians were not obese and 80% said they had maintained a consistent weight throughout their lives.
None consume alcohol to excess.
They have low levels of depression and anxiety. It’s much deeper than simply being cheerful and looking on the bright side. It’s deeply ingrained in your personality. You have to deal with trials and tribulations but it’s the way you deal with it. It’s not about avoiding stress but managing it and being flexible. Be like a duck flick it off.
Centenarians have low levels of neuroticism anger guilt shame and high levels of extroversion conscientiousness and openness to change. [/ul]
