Dear {usertag:name}

Welcome new member Dawn Arlene Davies. She writes: I have moved back to the area. Did community work in the area twenty odd years ago. Would like to find interests again. I’m 67 female.

Have a look at the Events calendar on the website. There is a huge amount happening locally.

The new Hills District Community Garden Group will be getting going at Patricks Rd State School – watch the Events calendar for the next meeting date which will be on a Saturday to look at the site and start planning. Transition The Grove is giving this group support to get started and steering our members who have indicated interest in gardens to it if they want to get involved in a community garden. The plan is to start there and expand to other sites and allottments with lots of opportunities for learning and fellowship.

The next big thing on the environment calendar is the Connecting With Forests Forum at the Brisbane Forest Park on Mt Nebo Rd in The Gap. It’s on the Events calendar. Should be an excellent day but you’ll need to register soon.

Are you following Transition The Grove’s program on local Radio YYY 87.6FM. It is on at a different time each day. You can find the program on the Events calendar. A new program starts each Monday.  If you have any suggestions for it do contribute. They’d be welcome.

Remember now you’re registered you can Add Events to the calendar – just keep them local to Upper Kedron Ferny Grove Arana Hills Ferny Hills or Keperra. And do contribute your thoughts to the Forums. We hope you find them valuable.

Warm regards

Follow-up from last weekend (9 10 October)

Transition The Grove Banner

To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

Arana Ausfest

Arana Ausfest was wisely postponed due to extreme weather. It will now be held on Saturday 30 October.  The deal is exactly the same (hopefully the weather will be different). We are all set to go with the necessary equipment and a couple of weeks extra for planning and preparation. I have used the graphics from our new banner as the header for this email (you may need to view it on-line).

We have set up our marquee to be solar powered. From previous experience this provides a couple of benefits.

  1. In enables is to use a lap-top computer to show some engaging and informative videos about Transition Towns.
  2. The solar panel is quite conspicuous and makes good conversation starter about renewable energy.

We have also purchased a couple of insulated pump-pots so that we can serve hot drinks to volunteers and visitors.

As before the Ausfest program is:

  • Setup is from 9:00am to 12:00 noon
  • Entertainment goes from 12:30pm to 6:50pm
  • Bump-out is from 6:30pm
  • Fireworks will go from 6:50pm to 7:00pm

We would appreciate your participation and hope to see you there.

Planning Meeting

Our planning meeting on Sunday 10 October was an opportunity for a focused discussion on how we can improve the effectiveness of our web-site in engaging new members. This quickly became a wider discussion about reaching out to the community generally. The main outcome was recognition of the fact that many people prefer to engage in hands-on activities rather than on-line discussion. The Community Garden initiative is now active. Hopefully Arana Ausfest and other promotional activities will add new members to that group.

Another initiative that can promote activities of interest to local residents in The Grove is the Energy Group. For example:

  • A Solar Panel ‘bulk-buy’ project.
  • A solar ‘mini expo’.
  • Educational seminars on renewable energy.
  • …other ideas not yet suggested?

Out of this discussion the suggestion arose to focus our next planning meeting (Arana Library on Sunday 14 November) on the Energy Group with a view to involving prospective new contacts from Ausfest and firming up plans along the lines suggested above.

So the key dates are:

  • Arana Ausfest – Saturday 30 October 12:30pm to 7:00pm
  • Energy Group Planning Meeting – Sunday 14 November 4:00pm to 6:00pm

If you have any suggestions comments or questions please add them to the discussion forum or give me a call on 3851 1016.

Regards

John Tennock

Thanks and invitation – Leah Hutchinson

Dear {usertag:name}

I’ve just been up to the studio at Radio YYY this morning ‘putting the program to bed’ for next week. The interview with you and your two songs are the main feature. I’ve broken it up into four sections.

Within the next few weeks the interview (with songs) will be available to download off the Radio YYY website for a few weeks then it will be removed. The interview will be available to download (and not removed) on the Transition The Grove website (Radio YYY link is on the Home page).

Thank you for doing the interview. It all went very well I thought and editing it last night it is very interesting to listen to. I hope you enjoy it!

I encourage you to join Transition The Grove and any of your staff who are locals too. In fact it would be great if your clients would like to join too if they are local around here but of course not in a way that we knew they were your clients.

It is a way for you and SIENA to increase your local contacts and visibility and also to network locally pretty easily. I’ve added a SIENA link on two Forums: Our Community – People with a disability; and Local Learning – Adults. By joining and having some SIENA threads reasonably active on the Forums you keep locals aware of the sorts of things you are doing.

I also encourage you to include the two themes of ‘local’ and ‘resilience’ in some of your SIENA activities. We’d always be happy to help. The community garden group might be a group you’d like to be aware of. I ran a course for U3A called Living Sustainably in the Suburbs which was great fun and you might like a mini-version of that sometime.

Joining is a straight-forward matter. You need to be adult (18 or over). The work you do for SIENA qualifies you to belong as it is making a significant contibution locally. The interest groups are if you want to get more involved and keep aware of what is happening locally on particular issues and meet other locals who are also interested in these issues.

Our membership privacy is carefully observed. If you nominate interest groups your name will be given to other members of those groups and they will be able to contact you directly but your phone and email are not given out. If you decide to join we regard it as an individual membership not a professional membership.

We hope to get down to the Open Day tomorrow but I’ve just been reminded we are babysitting our grandson most of the day so I’m not too optimistic…

Best wishes and thanks again

Anne

Tree planting – Bob Cassimaty Park

Transition The Grove Banner

Dear {usertag:name}

This e-newsletter is being sent to members of the Environment Subgroup.

Passing this on from Jacinta  our Creek Ranger so you know it is happening and can come along and join in and help if you want to.

Regards

Anne

Hi Everyone

Just so you are all aware there will be 2 locations for planting this Saturday.

We are probably best to all meet at the location where we planted on the 5th May (heading along Samford Road towards the Great Western Shopping Centre pass Cassimaty Park’s carpark cross the little bridge that goes over Cedar Creek/Kedron Brook and turn left into the driveway just before the rail crossing see attached map and refer to the red arrow – you will see 2 Council vehicles already down the end of the driveway.

We can than split people up with some of us planting 300 plants in Stage 3 – see attached Site Plan (where we couldn’t get our trucks in due to the wet grass) and the rest can stay and continue on with Stage 4 where we have around 300-400 plants to put in this Saturday.  Base camp will be set up at Stage 4 – so another busy day ahead for us.

Please let me know if this is confusing for anyone but otherwise so far it’s only looking like 1.8mm max of rain on Saturday so PLEASE no one do a rain dance this time.

The next planting after this will be on Saturday 23rd June in the same location.

Thanks again everyone and look forward to seeing you on Saturday.

Kind Regards

Welcome new member to Health Subgroup

Transition The Grove Banner
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

Welcome new member Frances Wellington to Transition The Grove’s Health Subgroup.

Frances is a kinesiologist and operates a kinesiology clinic from her home in Corrofin St Ferny Grove.

We have the potential as a well-defined group of people all with an interest in healthcare to think through and really make a difference to building a healthy community in the Kedron Brook Valley.

You can find out who you are by looking on the Groups tab at the Health Subgroup and send a bulletin to group members here. You can also use the Members Forum (or any of the other Forums). There are a lot of health discussion threads and you are encouraged to start some yourself or contribute.

We should meet sometime soon. One possible venue would be the North West Community Health Centre – they have good seminar rooms. I’ll contact them to see if I can arrange it.

Looking forward to working and planning with you all
