Dear {usertag:name}

This e-newsletter is being sent to the 48 members of the Environment Subgroup.

This weekend there is an exciting opportunity to be actively involved in a survey of the fish in Kedron Brook. This is part of the wildlife management programs and creek health that our Kedron Brook Catchment Group and Creek Ranger are continuously involved in.

Here is the email about it. If you are able to come along and take part email Jacinta Hamilton to get a copy of the Fish Snap Shot procedures and so that she can plan the numbers for the day.

jacinta.hamilton@brisbane.qld.gov.au

Thank you for showing interest in joining in with our Fish Snap Shot program.  This weekend we will be assessing 3 sites along Kedron Brook.  The details are as follows:

Sunday 25th March – 8am – Meet at Grinstead Park Shand Street Alderley – UBD ref Map 139 D8

Attached is a copy of the Fish Snap Shot procedures for your information so you are aware of what is involved on the day.  We will be using a Horiba for water quality testing which is in the process of being calibrated this week for more accurate results.

All equipment will be there on the days so just make sure you wear what’s appropriate for the sun:

hat sunscreen collared top enclosed shoes.

If you are happy to get wet on the day as we do wade through water that can be waist deep wear clothes that you are happy to get wet in.  We do have wet shoes for all sizes however if you do have shoes that you prefer to wear please make sure that they are enclosed.

Also:

insect repellant

a bottle of water

something to snack on

Otherwise everything else will be available to you on the day.

In the meantime please feel free to pass on the information to anyone that you think may be interested in joining us as the more hands on the day (and knowledge) the better.

Look forward to seeing you there and if you have any further questions or get lost on the day please call me on the mobile number below.

Kind Regards

Jacinta

Our Future Your Say population debate highlights

Comments by a panel of top speakers on population growth in South-East Queensland

Professor Brendon Gleeson:

  • Peak Oil Climate Change: our 1st and last line of defense is the suburbs.
  • We’ve been embarrassed about our urban reality sought to deride a suburban lifestyle
  • Vast majority live in suburbia & this disenfranchises them unjust self-defeating
  • Commonwealth scores a C-
  • Have to deal with our unwillingness to fully embrace the sustainability imperative
  • Population carrying capacity is not a straight-forward thing: We need to drive down the ecological footprint.

Jane O’Sullivan of Sustainable Population Australia

  • The argument for the growth we are now having is based on the need to grow. This is circular. We need to stabilize.
  • The talk about establishing an ideal population first is a distraction from the real issue
  • The real argument is around growth itself and the dishonesty of the justifications for it.
  • We need a national population strategy
  • The costs of growth are not being acknowledged against the purported benefits
  • The costs of growth are much greater than the costs of aging
  • The reason that I think talk about carrying capacity is a distraction is that Gleason is right – there is no figure that you could build concensus on because it depends on so many value judgements.  It’s also evident that we’re well over carrying capacity based on our current behaviour so it becomes a bit academic since we’re not planning to cull people.  Even if we’re arguably under carrying capacity by some definitions it’s easy to demonstrate that being well under carrying capacity is a good thing so that’s no reason to grow.

Councillor Campbell Newman:

  • We need a National Population Policy.
  • I’d like to see population throttled back
  • The Regional Plan isn’t broken but there are a few things to fix.
  • Some projections need challenging (migrant intake intergenerational). The Federal Government has to make the case.
  • Let’s build up Maryborough Rockhampton Bundaberg Logan Ipswich Scenic Rim Lockyer Somerset.
  • Not confident we can provide the infrastructure.
  • Federal Government is “shovelling them in through the door” We need help to deal with it
  • Commonwealth Government has no involvement. They need to be at the table.

Dear {usertag:name}

Welcome Sharon Crabbe to the Environment Subgroup.

By clicking on the Groups tab – Planning Forums – Environment you can start to get to know the other members in this Subgroup and communicate with them.

We look forward to sharing many activities for the benefit and understanding of our biodiversity and bioregion in the New Year and supporting local groups already working in this area.

Welcome new member – Lesley Given

Dear {usertag:name}

Please welcome new member Lesley Given. Lesley has joined the Food & Gardening Environment Education and Local History Subgroups.

Lesley has been a teacher for many years and has just retired so is interested in doing something locally.

Food & Gardening Environment and Education are large subgroups. Local History already has a good number of locals who have indicated an interest. We encourage you to go to the Groups Tab and have a look at who is in these groups. Use this facility to start making contact.

We can provide some of the initiative and energy to get things started but it will really take off when people in the groups take some initiative themselves and decide to organise gettogethers and start discussions and project ideas. Everything is there for you to ‘just do it’! The Groups are a fantastic way of immediately being put in touch with a large group of local people who have indicated they share an interest in the topic. Take it from there! Get creative and make things happen! Three don’ts: Don’t sell. Don’t push a political party line. Don’t evangalize.

We are very keen to see natural leaders emerge around any of the subgroups and when this happens they can be facilitated to coordinate the subgroup.

We do encourage all members to tell their friends about Transition The Grove and encourage them to join if they live locally (in 4054 or 4055) or are making a significant contribution to life in this valley.

We get a steady stream of membership applications that cannot be approved. These include applications that do not include a surname. Membership is not anonymous – we are all people with strong local links and we are about building a local community of people who recognise and know each other. While very careful controls are put on privacy we do not accept people whose bona fides cannot be verified. We also get quite a lot of applications from people who live elsewhere who have come across the website and are interested in the ideas. It is unusual to have a group so carefully restricted to people who live or have a strong local involvement. We often direct them to the Transition Town for their area or even suggest they start one if we know there is enough interest in the area they live in. Transition Towns are involved in helping each other get established in their own local areas.

We work closely with Transition The Gap (in The Gap) and Transition Enoggera (4053 4052 – Mitchelton Gaythorne Enoggera). We’re also keen to support a new Transition Initiative in the Downfall Creek area from Everton Hills down the catchment.

Best wishes

Anne Tennock
