In 2016, the Resilience Award theme was around recycling, repairing, and preserving material goods within the local community.

Two local businesses are Joint Winners of this year’s Transition The Grove Resilience Award. At the Award’s Dinner last night Pam Barlow – representing her team of 24 volunteers – from The Asthma Foundation Op Shop in Blackwood St, Mitchelton, and Tony Smith of A1 Mower Repairs and Marine, Glen Retreat Rd, Mitchelton were both presented with a $500 share of the Award and a certificate marking their contribution to preserving value in this local community.

The Asthma Foundation Op Shop has operated within this community for 18 years, and sources secondhand goods from within this community. The volunteer staff include people with a range of skills which they use to repair and revitalize some of the goods before returning them for sale within the local community.

Tony Smith has been operating for 30 years providing a repair and maintenance service for engines and equipment, and has built up a large and loyal clientele, including the Army base at Enoggera, Bunnings Carseldine, and Brett’s Hardware, and several thousand other locals. His knowledge base and store of parts is a local treasure.
