Assoc Prof Marianne Hanson has an impressive CV and research interests:

“Marianne Hanson’s research focuses on global security international law and international institutions with a specialisation in arms control and disarmament. She is currently researching the implementation of rules and norms for averting nuclear weapons’ possession and use linking this to the foreign policies of the world’s major states and their relevance to empirical cases such as in Iraq North Korea and Iran.”

Since Fukashima the World has been rethinking nuclear power. While Solar remains under developed and expensive and wind depends on the whims of the weather (and ugly) generating power to date has been dangerous and dirty. Things have to change.

Energy production has already brought us to the brink of overheating the environment and perhaps people don’t realise just how exponential the demand for power will be in the future as China and India and other mass populations become middle class with dishwashers and air conditioners. (not to mention Sth America greater Asia and Africa)

We will explore the positives of the nuclear option at subsequent meetings but it is hard to get a reply from ANSTO at all let alone a speaker. Clive Palmer would have spoken about mining and nuclear issues but is out of town; I hope to get onto him later.

Marianne Hanson brings a wealth of knowledge to nuclear issues in international affairs.
