I couldn’t help thinking these figures don’t make sense to me. I bought a new Diahatsu Charade in 1993 for $11000 and brought it across to Queensland and it is still running well. It was paid off well over a decade ago. Maintenance costs are minimal and it is very simple to service. I can even do it myself in the driveway and I am a woman! It gets an excellent kilometres to the litre – so much so that new cars are only now matching it. The new model trendy smaller cars are now catching up with its shape and design!!! It costs about $20 a week to run except that by living truly locally the need to use a car keeps going down more and more so one tank of fuel actually lasts closer to 3 weeks or a month. As a hatchback it also converts into a small station wagon to carry a lot – furniture picked up at a garage sale or shopping or even chooks.

There I’ve had my gloat.
