There will be surveys of gliders in the local bushland starting with training for volunteer surveyors.
The Launch with free BBQ lunch was an opportunity to sign up for training.
Geckoes Wildlife Presentations came along and gave a demonstration of wildlife to wide-eyed children and adults. There was a stunningly cute squirrel glider a bandicoot (very popular) a grey-headed flying fox a barking owl lizards and goannas a channel bill cuckoo a carpet python a green tree snake a brown tree snake a green tree frog and a cane toad.
The bats are very important as pollinators. They will become increasingly important as bee numbers are plummeting world-wide. Bats pollinate all year round over big areas.
The channel bill cuckoo lays its eggs in crows nests and lets crows do the work of raising its young. Given how destructive crows are of smaller birds this seems like a good example of the tables being turned!
There are 4 types of gliders. (squirrel sugar yellow-bellied and greater)and the survey will be looking for them all around here.
Training expected to be on 20 November.
Transition The Grove had their marquee and Kedron Brook Catchment Branch of Wildlife Queensland and our Brisbane City Council Creek Ranger Anna Bourke were all there. Ferny Grove Bushcare Group and Kedron Brook Bushcare Group were both represented.
The area there next to the Ferny Grove Police Station is very pleasant under the trees. It is all open and grassed.
