Hmm. The figure of $5/tonne needs checking.

Battersby’s Bulletin No 73 November 2010 has $35/tonne.

The new Waste Levy proposed by the Queensland Government from 1st July 2011 will apply on commercial and industrial waste to tips.

In the first 4 years it is estimated it may raise $379million (across all council tips presumably!) which will be spent in 2 ways:
[ul]$279million returned back as grants to councils or to industry waste programs
$100million as income to Queensland Government for new or expanded environmental programs in Queensland.[/ul]

While the need to keep providing motivation to reduce waste is very real councils also have some concerns. They will become the collectors of the fees at the tip gates (and will probably have to listen to the grumbles as well).

Councils are also concerned that at the effect of the Waste Levy as it works its way through increased costs to people building new homes people renovating homes and more costs to businesses.

There appears to be a possibility that residents who take trailer-loads of waste to the tip may also face a $15/box trailer charge for general waste that is now free (well paid for as part of council rates).
