Leading the World – from 42nd place
The Gillard Government’s recent announcement that there will be a carbon tax beginning in July 2012 has drawn predictable howls of outrage from big polluters. “Why should WE lead the world?” is the anguished cry from the plush boardrooms and well-paid spin doctors of the wealthiest companies and individuals in Australia.
A quick tally of carbon taxes and greenhouse emission trading schemes around the world confirms that if a carbon tax is introduced in 2012 we will manage to be in the first 50 as the 42nd state to put a price on carbon.
