St William’s Social Justice Group – Item for Newsletter – Feb 2012

The St William’s Social Justice Group exists to build an awareness and knowledge of social justice issues local national and global and to engage the parish in action for social justice. When we look at the world around us this can become rather daunting and thus our group has focussed on raising awareness on some key issues such as:
Building Bridges not Walls: Prisons and the justice system – the 2011-12 Social Justice Statement asks us to think about conditions in our prisons who is sentenced to prison and why.
Refugees & Asylum Seekers – to dispel some of the myths by regular items in the newsletter – we need to replace fear by love of our neighbour
Indigenous – by supporting National Sorry Day & the very moving service at Teralba Park on 26 May
Same Sex Marriage – by highlighting that Marriage is the formal public institution of the family fostered as such quite deliberately by the state for very sensible reasons. Marriage as currently defined provides the state with a sound and reliable structure for the loving procreation and careful nurturing of its future citizens.
Our St Williams School Activity Club continues with a small band of enthusiastic volunteers who work (& play) with some children after school & is much appreciated by the School – we need more to help in this area!
The Timor Leste Companions group has grown in strength & is now operating separately with support from the SJ group as required.

As we move into 2012 what are the issues that affect us? All of the above and more!
What would you like to see us tackle? Drop us a line via the Parish Office or better still come to our next meeting on Wed 15 February at 7.30pm in the Library.
