Listening to the National Press Club on ABC TV today it is about the position of women. Grim statistics.

Globally women do 2/3rds of the work
Earn less than 10% of the income
Own less than 1% of the property
And more than 600 million are illiterate
Childbirth is the leading cause of death for women globally! Still!
Female babies are aborted and killed
Girls are sold into prostitution and slavery denied education forbidden a voice a driver’s licence to show their faces in public have their genitals mutilated are raped in war in HIV in violent communities

Australia has slipped backwards a long way and is behind countries like Cuba in its treatment of women.

5.2 million Australian women now are in jobs. The gender age gap is 18% the largest its been in decades. There is a big gap between male and female wages.

Gender equality and economic empowerment… Closing the gender pay gap matters. And in superannuation too – 27% of Australian women have no superannuation.

Need to reduce violence against women and children too. In Australia one in three women will experience domestic violence and one in five sexual violence over their lifetimes. Shocking statistics. Not acceptable.

Still I’d rather be a woman than a man!
