Visited Yooralla St Community Garden for their monthly picnic on Saturday – such a lovely group. Talked with Joan about how the planning had gone. Very well apparently – seems gardeners have a quality of their own. Must be something to do with working with growing things.

They have approval from the Council for a community garden but not a community farm – the latter would allow them to have chooks/animals.

They got a $20000 grant which went into buying water tanks reticulation gear a shed hay…

They have already had crops which have then been turned over to something new. Gardens are always changing.

Great idea: Old pallets used to make compost bins to form the 3 vertical sides.

The allotment system is working well. People who want to join work for some weeks on a shared area to demonstrate their commitment before they can get an allotment.

Having the SOWN building is a great asset for meeting/kitchen/toilets.

Each area of the garden has someone in charge of it. If people don’t look after their allotment (for example leaving ripe stuff to rot and bring in fruit fly) they are contacted.

In the general areas there is a system of red and green stakes. The red stakes say: Don’t pick. The green stakes say: Can be picked.

There are produce boxes of shared produce.
