Build It Back Green – Queensland by Jeremy Mansfield
What do Suncorp Insurance Good Shepherd Lend Lease Ergon Energy LGAQ PCA Queensland Conservation Council Arup WWF GHD BVN Architects and Volunteering Queensland all have in common? A desire to build back smart and green from Queensland’s summer of horrific weather.
Green Cross Australia plays a catalysing and convening role in shaping a Build It Back Green Qld initiative. Green Cross is not an advocacy group – rather we catalyse and convene multi-stakeholder initiatives that empower people to respond to environmental change. The BIBG initiative aims to leverage disaster recovery efforts so as to maximise sustainability and community resilience outcomes while reducing longer-term energy water and waste (or utility) bills. The initiative hopes to catalyse green jobs and investment in green infrastructure that is resilient while empowering communities to influence investments in recovery through informed community-based deliberation.
The idea is simple: if we rebuild like for like each time a major event hits it reinforces future exposure and fails to leverage the opportunity to reduce environmental impacts and ongoing running costs. It also reduces our opportunity to innovate with more resilient and sustainable design and materials – so we miss out on industry development and green job gains.
As we have seen through Green Cross leadership of a sustainable recovery in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans green disaster rebuilding creates green jobs saves greenhouse emissions reduces energy bills and supports community resilience. The recent BIBG Stakeholder Workshop supported by DERM in Queensland’s Parliament House explored opportunities challenges and ideas for prioritising practical exemplar and supportive initiatives to support residents schools green infrastructure green buildings and community engagement.
