We went over to Arana Kmart Plaza today to ‘see Santa’ – at least the kids were there getting their photos taken with him.

There were a number of Santa’s elves wandering through the shopping centre and best of all four tiny deer fauns all soft and spotty and incredably delicate looking. We had a pat and they were fed milk from a bottle.

The shopping centre was alive with people. Can’t remember when I’ve seen a local shopping centre so busy. We got a car park under the shade though.

A team of people were providing a free present wrapping service.

Of course it was also a chance to shop! I bought a Christmas tree (artificial made in China) for the grand sum of $49 and took it home and put it up with all the decorations and it is pretty jolly good. There is always pleasure digging out the stored Christmas decorations – we get one new one each year and each is a treasure some very special. Very culturally symbolic too. In the meantime our faithful live Christmas pine is out in its pot in the garden – needs a good prune to get it back into shape.

Half our grandchildren are a long way away so we came home laden down with very tiny delicate light presents (good for posting). Feels like we’ve shopped till we drop which hardly ever ever happens. Must be Christmas. Grandkids are the only excuse I can think of to do it!

Also in true Christmas style for Brisbane summer I bought an annual pair of bikinis (2 for 1 actually for the ridiculously low price of $20) and headed home to the swimming pool because it has been hugely humid. The pool temperature is 29 degrees C. Now there is a torrential downpour with lakes of water quite cooling. Palm fronds are falling down.

I have the motivation now to do the Christmas cards and make a Christmas cake.

Christmas in Kedron Brook valley.
