The Great Artesian Basin is one of the most well known geological features of Queensland. Surprisingly despite its importance the social and economic history has been largely overlooked. It barely rates a mention in histories of Queensland.

This talk seeks to redress the balance and argues that the Great Artesian Basin played a crucial role in shaping Queensland’s development including water legislation industry urban development as well as impacting on the natural environment.

This talk was presented by Thom Blake and the State Library in association with the Department of Environment and Resource Management Heritage branch.
