Christmas is a challenge for avoiding fructose but being aware of it certainly helps.

I’ve allowed my self one mango in the mango avocado & prawn salad and I only eat a portion of the whole salad. This is a huge change from pigging out on delicious mangoes when they are ripe and glorious at this time of year.

The fruit shops are also full of trays of perfect nectarines and peaches and melons and apricots. I’ve allowed myself one apricot (instead of a dozen!) and had one quarter slice of watermelon at a luncheon somewhere.

Cherries are absolutely perfect this year. Haven’t looked up yet whether cherries are high in fructose but suspect they probably are. I’ve had quite a few cherries but not the whole kilogram in one go as once would have happened. In the back of my mind having the fear of a diverticulitis attack and the doctor’s threat of bowel surgery certainly assists self-control.

This year we’ve made one fruit cake (not our usual two). They have 5 cups of dried fruit in them. This year we’ve limited ourselves to very thin slices only and only when a guest is here. So most of the fruit cake has been shared out to friends and family which feels good for hospitality of the season and we’ve had a taste but kept within tight limits.

Same with Christmas fruit pies.

So we are coming up to Christmas with thinner tummies and a lot less tummy disturbance than in previous years and have still enjoyed some Christmas fare.
