Following the Cairns case where the young couple were charged after an abortion (and they were subsequently cleared) the subject of abortion is high on the political agenda.

The view is that changes to Queensland’s abortion laws are being planned and copying the tactic used to liberalise surrogacy laws. That is to table a bill in the last week of sitting for the year go and enjoy a Christmas break and come back to vote on the controversial bill in the first week of sitting while the population is still sleeping holidaying or otherwise distracted.

We could have abortion legal for ANY reason until birth.

…No safeguards no cooling off periods no mandatory offer of independent counselling no mandatory reporting of underage girls suspected of being victims of abuse! (Vic. Law)

…No legal recognition of the unborn child at all in law! (Vic. Law)

…No freedom for conscientious objection for medical staff and doctors (Vic. Law)

This would result in more abortions and the associated trauma and complications for the parents and family members. Particularly concerning is the 6-fold rise in late-term abortions following the decriminalisation of abortion in Victoria. (Channel 7 news report)

Reports are being received that pro-abortion MPs are placing pressure on colleagues by calling them on the phone and asking them to support a private member’s bill to liberalise abortion laws.

The abortion issue is quite similar to the euthanasia issue but abortion is the one coming under political pressure at the moment.

The Group is urging those who are concerned to contact their MPs about this before November 22 since if a private members bill is introduced in the last sitting week of the year that would be Nov. 23-25.

Abortion is a major issue which touches many lives in our community and as such is certainly worthy of taking the time to speak with each other and our politicians about.
