We’ve just been up to the Ferny Grove Waste Transfer Station to dispose of a lot of old concrete sleepers metal and garden waste.

This is an extremely convenient facility to have so close to home.

It is a thoroughly professional well set up facility and creates absolutely minimal dust smell or noise.

Having said that it is such a shame that there is no recycling through this Transfer Station.

You even have to pay to bring stuff in that is valuable recycling materials such as metal.

There is a huge amount of timber of reasonable quality just dumped and destroyed. It makes my heart bleed to see the waste. These are the products of our precious forests thrown away without a thought. This wood could be readily reused. What on earth does BCC think it is doing?

There is no tip shop. The nearest BCC tip shop is at Acacia Ridge which might as well be on the moon as far as recycling from here locally is concerned.

Our waste delivered here is transferred to the Rochedale Landfill Site a very long way away. Just the fuel alone to transport represents a waste.

Unlike Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Bunya Tip there is no opportunity to buy mulch processed from our green waste.

We deliver mountains of green waste to the tip but cannot buy any back after it is shredded and chipped. This is a disgrace. This is a valuable resource that we should be able to purchase for our gardens to build up the soil. As it is we are paying (tip vouchers or cash) to denude the soil on our properties of essential elements.

There is no opportunity to let items that we don’t want ourselves but which are in fair condition to be scavenged by others who could reuse them. This is such a basic part of no wasting resources. Once again why are we denuding our suburbs of resources which are potentially valuable. Instead they get pushed over the edge into the concrete pit and smashed up by bulldozers before being compacted and sent off to Rochdale Landfill. To me this is obscenely criminal in a world that is rapidly depleting of essential resources.
