There is a rush to buy potassium iodide pills to prevent radiation sickness in areas potentially threatened by Japan’s nuclear disaster. The UN’s health agency said iodine pills were ‘not radiation antidotes’ and offered no protection against radioactive elements such as caesium. They also carried health risks for some people including pregnant women.
