Be very clear:
What is it you want to do?
What do you want to achieve?
How do you want to do it?
What needs to be done and when?
Who needs to be involved?
What resources are required?

Ensure that you contact the relevant Council officer to discuss your project before submitting your application. They’ll likely offer to look at a draft application. Take up their offer and take their advice.

NOTE: When we attended the BCC evening on how to apply for grants the grant officers were absolutely terrific very easy to talk to very helpful.

Know what the funding body is looking for. Clearly show how the goals of your project match those of the funding body.
Use words from the guidelines in your application to form a strong link between the two.

Be clear and ocncise when filling in your application. Use plain language and make it easy for the assessor to understand who you are and what you need funding for. Focus on the project now not the history. Don’t be too wordy. Don’t give information that is not needed.

Give yourself enough time to put in a good application. Don’t rush. Start well ahead of the closing date.

Provide evidence to back up your application. How did you come to the knowledge?

Where possible get support from outside your organisation such as letters of support from regional bodies like other organisations and your local Councillor.

Your local Councillor will play a part in assessing grant applications. Strongly recommend you contact him and ask for his support.

Answer every question.

Provide all necessary documentation wherever possible.

Submit your application at least 6 months before the project is due to start. Don’t wait until the last minute.

You will be asked: Have you applied to other funding bodies? Don’t just say: No. It is better to give more than a one-word answer. Explain why. Have you tried to get funding from your local Councillor another funding body the Lord Mayor’s Suburban Initiative? There is a lot of funding out there. BCC sees themselves as a small funding body.

BCC wants a minimum of $20 million in public liability insurance for the incorporated association or auspicing association for grants. It is a big area that community garden applications in particular fall over.
