Remember the prayer:

..Give us the wisdom we need to choose our future where we will know your true peace.
You call us out of slavery oppression and persecution so that we may have life in abundance.
Grant us peace with one another.
Give peace among ethnic groups.
Help us to work together for the good of all.
We ask this in your name Jesus our Lord. Amen

Here is a poem about a form of entrapment that is close to slavery:

More Than Slaves

A chance meeting
A temporary rest on a park bench
Next to a pregnant woman
In the CBD rush hour
Watching workers in black
Stream desperately by.

“It’s an awful sight”
She broke into sobs
Her heavy full bellied
Black-clothed body
Heaving
“I wish I didn’t have to work.
Life shouldn’t be like this.”

A slave with her chains
Momentarily loosened.

There is another way
Not whispered in the TV ads
Not in the fine print
Of the purchase contract
Not on the credit card slips
Not in the trendy gear of friends
Or travel photos
Not in cravings for stuff
Not driving the biggest
Owning the largest
Paying the highest
Having the latest
Or most
Not in choosing enslavement.

Don’t sign up
Duck and run
Under the radar
Turn off the ads
Cut the credit card
Make a New Year’s goal
To prise the chains off
One link at a time
The lilies of the field
The birds of the air
They had to make choices
To mortgage their souls
To sell the field the sky
Or to be free
Choose freedom
The Earth will thank you.
