FUELtrac general manager Geoff Trotter said the size of fuel hikes across Australi recently is staggering.

The prices paid by motorists are approaching the records paid when global oil prices hit a peak of US$145 a barrel in 2008 but the current global oil prices is about US$88 a barrel.

The big grocery chains (Woolworths and Coles) enjoy discounts of 3c-4cents a litre so their margins would be well over 20c/litre.

Coles and Woolworths sell 9 billion litres of fuel a year.
