In 1865 John Delaney Bergin became the first person in the area to purchase large portions of land in the district. He owned the land on which the Ferny Grove State School now sits.

Ferny Grove was settled by 1875 when crops and dairy cattle formed part of the agriculture of the area. In the same year the Kedron Brook Provisional School opened with an enrolment of 16 pupils.

The area was known as Ferny Flats until it was changed by the Railways because of existence of Ferny Flats in New South Wales. After the railway station name changed the district and later the suburb name changed.

John Delaney Bergin whose name is remembered by Bergin Road and Bergin Creek first purchased land in the district. This totalled 11961 acres from Bunya through to the Samford Valley.

The Ferny Grove State School was established in 1875 as Upper Kedron Provisional School. Due to its long history in the area it has become a well-known landmark.
