Obviously the Community Calendar has a long way to go before it is complete. The more locals who take part in adding local classes and markets and events they know about to the Community Calendar the more complete it will be and the more useful for everyone in this community.

What is the use of a Community Calendar? Why do we have one?

Well firstly it is very useful for any individual who wants to look it up and find out where something is on locally. What is happening locally? What would be good to get involved in? Where is it happening? Who is the contact for it? What do I need to do to go along? What does it cost?

If you are looking for local events you might choose a type of event like ‘Healthy Community’ or ‘Local Recreation’ and that will give you a list of events in that category.

If you are a member and you are wanting to add an event you will find we have done a lot of homework identifying local places where events are held. There is a long list of venues to choose from. If you are organising an event it will help you think about where it might be held.

Also if you are planning an event you might be wise to find out first if there are other local major events on around the time planned. It really doesn’t help to have two big expos or fetes scheduled for exactly the same day and time but you’d be amazed how frequently it happens. The Community Calendar is only as complete as people make it but it can certainly help give you some warning of other things that are on.

However none of these are the really big reason we think a Community Calendar is important. The really big reason a Community Calendar is important is because it can help make it much easier for us to live locally. If there is so much on in our local community and we start having a terrific time and meeting people and getting involved right close to home the pull away from community lessens steadily.

When my husband and I made the commitment to start living locally around here we found it very hard. We knew very little about all the great things that happen locally. It seemed like dullsville. Now we think exactly the opposite. There is so much happening locally that it is possible to be involved every day and night of the week and not come close to doing all the things we’d like to do.

The Community Calendar is terrific for helping live within a budget. It cuts the cost of travel down to almost nothing. It also cuts down the time taken to get to events down to about 5 minutes or 10 at the most. Parking is a breeze! And living local going to local events is also very affordable especially compared to city outings.

Choosing events from the Community Calendar means starting to get involved in local community. It means meeting people at events then running into them at the shopping centre or the station or at church or local schools or sports events or in the park or even next door! I know some of my neighbours much better by getting involved in local clubs that they also belong to!

Anyway I thoroughly encourage you to get on to the Transition The Grove website and start making full use of the Community Calendar. Don’t be hesitant about joining – all it involves is identifying yourself as a local since this website is strictly for locals. There’s no charge and once you are registered you can add events too which would be great.

Cheers let’s have a song!
