Environment Group Meeting Venue

Transition The Grove Banner
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

This is to let Transition the Grove – Environment Group members know that I have just had a fruitful discussion with the leader of the local Scout group and come to an agreement in principle that we can use the Scout Hall in Wahminda Grove Ferny Hills (in Samford Road just past the new Woolshed Grove residential development).

This seems like an ideal base for local environmental activities such as wildlife surveys educational presentations bushcare projects and refreshments to follow any of these. The group plans to install multimedia facilities (data projector) in the near future.

I haven’t yet had the opportunity to check out inside the building but I’m told that it has recently been refurbished mainly to replace the asbestos lining.

In principle it is available Thursday through Sunday and during school holidays subject to confirmation for each individual booking. Scouts use it on Monday through Wednesday evenings and their requirements would always take priority of other bookings.

Understandably the scouts would be looking for a donation to support their valuable work with youth and to help maintain the building.

We have enjoyed participating in a number of activities with the Kedron Brook Management Branch (Glider Survey Frog Survey etc). No doubt this venue could also be used for these activities.

The Wahminda Grove bush-care group is active in the areas adjacent to the scout hall and may be available to talk to a group meeting an share their experience and knowledge of the local flora.

Any suggestions about Environment Group activities that might be planned for this venue would be appreciated.

Regards

John Tennock

Welcome new member – Nick Fog

To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

Welcome new member Nick Fog to The Hands and Community Cultural Values subgroups. Nick is interested in Men’s Sheds and woodwork.

TRAMS (Tuesday Retired Active Men’s Shed) meets at the Brisbane Tramway Museum in Tramway St Ferny Grove on Tuesdays (surprise!) from about 8am to 4pm. Lots of projects to get involved in and big workshops. An ideal place to work with tools with other men’s company. BYO lunch.

Transition The Grove has a keen interest in preserving manual skills (and nurturing a growing interest in them locally) as part of local resilience building for the future.

Enoggera Transition and Transition The Gap are the other two Transition Towns in the North West of Brisbane. We usually meet regularly together at Zanetti’s in Blackwood St Mitchelton for Green Drinks on the 2nd Friday of the month from 5:30pm to 8pm. Not this month though because there is a celebration in at The Fox on the same evening for the Say Yes campaign that many people involved in Transition Towns will be going to.

Warm regards

Anne

Financing the transformation to a zero carbon economy

Transition The Grove - Energy Group
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

This should be an interesting forum for those who would like to attend.

Public forum with special international guest speaker Ann Pettifor (UK) and Ian Lowe (Griffith University).

Australia is about to make its first important step towards a zero carbon economy by making the 500 most polluting companies pay for the carbon they put into the atmosphere and supporting the development of clean energy sources. But a carbon price alone will not be enough to transform our economy and society into one that is ecologically sustainable.

Ann Pettifor is a British economist and campaigner for justice and ecological sustainability. She is a member of the Green New Deal working group in the UK a group focused on working out practical ways to make the global economic system fairer give workers a better deal wind back the power of corporations and the big banks and at the same time lead the necessary transformation to ecological sustainability.

Organized By: SEARCH Foundation Queensland Conservation Council and the Green Institute.

Suggested donation $10/$5.

RSVP by 31 August to bron@search.org.au or (02) 9211 4164.

Dear {usertag:name}

8:30SBS1  TONIGHT Tuesday 15th February (Part 2 of 2)

The Future Of Food

Are we facing a global food crisis? We take our food for granted. Supermarket shelves groan with an incredible variety of produce but in 2008 as food riots swept the world we saw that the international food system is not as stable as it looks. Is this just the beginning of a new era of food? Travelling to different parts of the globe this two-part documentary unravels the complicated web of links that binds the world together and asks what needs to happen to avert a major global food crisis. Welcome New Member

To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

Please welcome new member Glenda Chadwick to the Environment Subgroup. Glenda is Secretary of Men of the Trees QLD. This group makes a very significant contribution locally in The Grove with their regular plantings and maintenance here. MOTT Qld is a bush care group and was established in Brisbane in the early 1980s. The group have endeavoured to have a planting or maintenance activity each Saturday.  Sometimes there is a social day instead. Look out for their events in our Community Calendar.

Tonight there is a seminar at Downfall Creek as part of the BCC’s Northern Seminar Series. This one is on three dangerous pests – myrtle rust fire ants and crazy ants. The guest speaker is Wayne Roberts a Community Engagement Officer with Biosecurity Queensland (BQ) based at Oxley’s BQ Control Centre. Since 2001 Wayne has worked mainly on the National Red Imported Fire Ant Eradication Program but also has experience with the recent Myrtle Rust outbreak.These seminars are always top quality and a great group of people Look out for future ones – Anna Bourke sends us details and we put them in the Community Calendar.

Would you like to be shown how to use the website tools on Transition The Grove’s website to help you announce your events share what your group is doing locally and meet others who share your interests? I’m happy to spend some time with individuals or groups helping them do this. John has put together a great set of tools that we can all use to make communication simple and virtually free within our local community.

Just drop us an email at administrator@transitionthegrove.org.au to arrange a time.

Warm regards

Invitation – Elizabeth Handley – Brisbane Residents United

Transition The Grove Banner
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

We’ve met several times mainly through the Hillbrook Sustainability Days.

I’d like to invite you to do two things:

  • join Transition The Grove
  • be interviewed for Radio YYY 87.6FM

Firstly the invitation to join Transition The Grove would be for your involvement with leading the Brisbane Residents United.It is an invitation to join and register for the Governance interest subgroup in particular. Our membership is primarily for local residents but a small number of individuals are invited to join for the contribution they make directly to our local community. Through Brisbane Residents United you are providing our local community with a voice to have their say.

Governance has proven to be a fascinating aspect of understanding local. We never anticipated it would be but it is. Huge and important. We are not a lobbying group (constitutionally not politically aligned and restricted from trying to promote any political party). However the focus on ‘local’ is proving to be the most politically enlightening approach we have ever taken. Our Governance Forum is huge.

As a member you would be encouraged to add events to the Community Calendar and participate in the Community Forum and the Governance Subgroup. It seems to attract electoral candidatesbut as I said is strictly non-party political.

Joining is done via the Join tab on the website at www.transitionthegrove.org.au

I also invite you to be interviewed for the Transition The Grove Hour on Radio YYY 87.6FM. These interviews are also downloadable from our website and from Radio YYY’s website. I have now got a very good microphone which plugs directly into my little netbook computer and I can take it around with me making interviewing very easy. The editing software works well to remove coughs and pauses.

Let’s get together soon!
