(Enter via the main gate adjacent to the pedestrian crossing in McGinn Road. Proceed straight up the path past the admin building. Turn right at the end and the Library/Resource Centre is on your right (L Block))

Welcome New Member – Kirsten Mackenzie

Transition The Grove Banner
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

This e-Newsletter is going to members of the Food & Gardening Recreation Health Business & Finance Environment and Water Subgroups.

Welcome new member Kirsten Mackenzie to Transition The Grove and these Subgroups. Kirsten has a local business and links with local associations/school or church.

Subgroups are for you to get actively involved and to meet others who share your interest enough to want to work together to make a difference locally. None of us have the time or energy to get involved too broadly so we encourage you to limit the number of Subgroups to those you are genuinely willing and able to take part in and turn up to meet others and be part of planning for local resilience and the future together.

Remember the Ferny Grove Festival on 28th April from noon onwards. Transition The Grove will be there. Come along and say hello. Take part. It is an opportunity for you to meet and talk with local people about subjects of local interest. The first and most important step is to start to get to recognise a few faces and know a few names. Swap contact details.

Belonging locally starts with all of us.

Cheers

Anne Tennock

Dear {usertag:name}

 This e-newsletter is being sent to the Food & Gardening Subgroup.

1. Link to a review for a book on local food. Loved the review.

 Rebuilding the Foodshed by Philip Ackerman-Leist.

2. Food Buying Group Workshop

If you are not already aware a bunch of us have been working feverishly on putting together what we hope to be a fantastic workshop on how to set up your own food buying groups.

We see this as an important step to becoming more resilient in terms of the stuff we are putting into our mouths and also in terms of community resilience.

We are also hoping the emerging food groups will then become hubs of activity for other ventures and a place to meet your neighbours.

I’ve attached our flyer for the workshop and would love if you could share it far and wide.

foodies unite workshop

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?fromEmail=true&formkey=dDVkbWU1VDBQNjg3ZFhGWFJjcjBWdEE6MQ

Register for an all-day workshop  on 24th March.

3. Love Food Hate Waste Event.

YOU’RE INVITED…to our FREE event. Sensational line up including Australia’s first MasterChef Julie Goodwin & legendary cooking family the Fultons. A beautiful opportunity to share the inter-generational wisdom of our Foodies – their passion recipes and tips to healthy eating without the waste. Love to see you there. APRIL 8 – all details at the link

The 1 Million Women Campaign is a registered charity. Launched in June 2009 we have over 80000 joined and over 36000 on our facebook. Our long-term aim is lasting behaviour change. Our goal is to inspire 1 Million Women to take practical action on climate change by cutting 1 tonne of pollution out…

4. Land-grabbing

We should all be concerned about land grabbing. Our land our water resources are our wealth. Also long-term contracts for food exports being signed without any protections being put in place to ensure that Australians are fed first from Australian farmland.

www.abc.net.au

As experts warn of an impending food crisis wealthy corporations and nations have been snapping up land in the world’s poorest countries.

5.  Food and food growing is high on the agenda right now. The HD Community Garden Group is in the process of applying for a site for a community garden up next to Bunya Tip. Lovely site with a deeply peaceful view over forests and some lovely old trees to rest under. Contact is Jo Barkworth.

6. Did you read the short article in the North West News about continuing to look for suitable land for a community garden? We’re not sure who put it in and TTG’s President John has contacted Cr Andrew Wines office to see if he can get more information. We’ll keep you posted.

7.  Don’t know about you but our garden is growing like blazes at the moment with all the rain and warmth. We’ve dug over the soil in the raised bed where we had put a lot of Bunya tip tree mulch and it is now rich soil (with a lot of witchety grubs in it!) Planting now for autumn. Bananas are loving this weather. We got out with our granddaughter and planted a white mulberry tree (seedling) which should grow tall as she does and give us sweet fruit for years to come. The passionfruit are ripening well too. Do share your growing stories. If anyone wants cuttings or seeds let me know. We get heaps  and are learning what to do with them.

8. Remember those terrific organisations Brisbane Organic Growers Inc (1st Thursdays at Peace Hall Albion) QLD Herb Society and the Subtropical Fruit Club. Brisbane Local Food Ning continues to be an excellent source of information about gardening workshops.

9. We’re devastated at the news that the Community Nutritionist for the Metro North Region Deb Blakely is going (the position has been wiped). Deb organised the excellent Food Relief Network in this region that has brought together a whole lot of separate organisations who provide emergency food relief (huge amounts). I’ve contacted our local MP about it but so far our community nutrition needs are just being lost in the political process.

Drop us a message with any food or gardening news you’d like shared.

Happy growing.
Anne

TTG BBQ for Social Inclusion Week

Transition The Grove Banner
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

Social Inclusion Week (20-28 November) is about encouraging Australians to reconnect on a social level to celebrate social diversity and help overcome isolation.

This is Transition The Grove’s first involvement at organising a gathering for Social Inclusion Week so we’ll keep it simple.

Friday 26 November late afternoon in the park at Leslie Patrick Park. Just turn up. We’ll be frying sausages and eggs tomatoes and onions and will bring buns and the makings of tea and coffee and ginger beer cordial.

We’ll cater for 25. Come along and share our simple repast and chat about local stuff.

Hope to see you there.  We’ll put up a Social Inclusion Week sign so you can recognise us.

Regards

John Tennock

Going for it!

Transition The Grove Banner
To view this message on-line please {readonline}Click here.{/readonline}.

Dear {usertag:name}

This is to let the management committee know about a couple of “executive decisions” I have made in order to meet deadlines.

We now have 14 official registrations for our Clean Up Australia Day event which is very encouraging! I believe this response is because I just made the deadline for getting the details into the February issue of The Hills Echo.

I am confident that we can expect a lot more volunteers from other sources. Many people don’t bother to register preferring to just turn up on the day.

With the aim of building community awareness I think it is important to have some publicly accessible activity on each month and promote this through the Echo and other available channels.

I am also keen to capitalise on the visibility we gain from Clean Up Australia Day to invite prospective new members to definite events.

With all that in mind I have sent the following to The Hills Echo for publication in the (18 March) issue:

Transition The Grove invites you to a free public video and discussion evening about building a local community that is sustainable environmentally responsible and resilient in the face of disruptive events. Watch locals put centrally located land back into food production. Enjoy the zest with which reskilling expertise is passed along. Tour a school where community building is taught. And go inside the council chambers as members discuss passing ordinances to accelerate Transition initiatives.

And there are the children. Lots of children. They are woven as a strand through the piece; their beaming faces a glimpse of a future with more holiness. We watch them as they learn and we listen as they speak in their own voices. A poised young lady emerges as one of the film’s narrators.

But the notion of community resilience is really the star of this show. The movie will be followed by a facilitated discussion and a chat over supper.

Where: The Hills Uniting Church Hall Corner of Cycas and Alstonia Steets Arana Hills

When: 7:00pm Wednesday 13 April

Cost: Free (Gold coin donation appreciated)

More Information: www.transitionthegrove.org.au

This was thrown together rather hastily because I will be tied up all weekend and may otherwise have missed the deadline.

I have also booked the venue and arranged with Chris Wright for the loan of their data projector and the DVD of the movie.

I have agreed in principle to make a financial donation to the church for use of the venue but have not yet agreed on an amount. Hopefully the gold coin donations will cover most of it.

More details to come

John Tennock
