Tomorrow’s Congregations Today – the Dayboro experience
With mainstream denominations facing declining congregational numbers and even closing churches here is a chance to find out what happens when the tide flows the other way – and from the point of facing closure numbers increase until satellite congregations and home churches are formed. This folks is tomorrow congregations today – the Dayboro experience.
His priorities at Dayboro were related to generating full lay involvement in the mission of the local church efficient and responsible decision-making ensuring the church was relevant to the community and congregation engaging with all the significant local and regional organisations and government representatives breaking down the negative views of ‘church’ and making welfare work paramount. This called for a new interpretation of the organisational framework and a major shift from ‘orthodox’ and now clearly out dated and ponderous approaches to ‘contemporary’ ones so that a bold assertion of the importance of lay people in a church planning to survive and grow into the 21st Century can be achieved. The way in which the congregation and community responded affirmed the strategies.
The result was that in a region with mainstream denomination churches closing regularly Paul oversighted a more than 600% growth in ten years starting from a congregation of 20 and with the church facing closure and a range of acknowledgements by municipal and government agents. Dr Inglis has accepted the Lay Forum’s invitation to share his experiences and processes so that others can consider the possibilities for their application.
Having entered congregational ministry late in life Dr Inglis brought to his appointment as Queensland’s first (Lay) Community Minister a range of useful experiences and qualifications (sadly the community minister role is now being phased out). He came directly from twenty five years academic experience in the (QUT) Faculty of Education (Centre for Leadership Studies and School of Cultural and Policy Studies). He had for several decades been an active lay leader in the Anglican and Uniting Churches.
