Today (21/12/2010) is one of those astronomical coincidence days. It is the summer solstice a full moon and a lunar eclipse. Not that any of these is a fast moving event for anyone in a hurry.
However the weather looks set to be fine so if you happen to be in a place (preferably on a hill) with a view to the east you might like to take time to check it out. It’s always interesting to watch the moon rise (you can actually watch it safely unlike the sun).
So here’s the timing for Brisbane:
The moon is 99.9% full at 6:13pm
Mid eclipse occurs at 6:17pm
The moon rises (partially eclipsed) at 6:40pm
The eclipse ends at 9:04pm.
While watching you can explain to children and any other captive audience about the summer solstice full moon and lunar eclipse.
