Moreton Bay Regional Council has budgeted $1.5million for salt water spraying of 3000hectares of land per treatment with an average summer treating of 50000 hectares in total.
Mosquitoes can travel 20 to 30 kilometres given the right conditions so although major breeding sites being sprayed are at Hays Inlet Beachmere Bribie Island and Lawnton we also benefit here from the effects of having the mosquitoes controlled. About 40% of the land sprayed by the Moreton Bay Regional Council is owned by the Queensland Government.
Another $350000 is budgeted this financial year across the Moreton Bay Regional Council region for treatment against fresh water mosquitoes in ponds and containers where they breed.
We can all do our bit by going out and checking carefully for any containers at all that are holding water (pot plant bases pot plants buckets tubs….) and emptying them preferably turning them so they can’t hold water that mosquitoes could breed in.
