Heard a remarkable experiment on the Happiness Project where subjects were measured before and after some simple volunteer work. They recorded a remarkable increase in just 2 hours.
Listening to the speaker at the Sport and Recreation seminar at the Ralph Took Auditorium recently coaching junior sport would have to be one of the great altruistic contributions in our local community. Almost certainly it not only does wonders for young lives but it also provides a deep sense of meaning and adds to the well-being in the lives of the coaches.
All the people who are able to find a way to make a volunteer contribution in our community are also getting benefits to their own well-being that flow from acting altruistically. Whether it be helping in a school tuck-shop or reading program visiting people working in an op-shop or any of the many ways available it is well worth it all round.
