Our philosopher friend Mac Campbell (How Then Shall We Live?) who is working on this area says:
Cruelty is the world’s #1 problem no shadow of doubt.
Ignore it and you might as well be an ostrich.
He forwarded an invitation to a seminar and it included the following:
Every day 1000 women are violently assaulted across Australia and one in three women will be assaulted or abused in their lifetime. Globally up to six out of every ten women experience physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime.
Violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread violations of human rights. It can include physical sexual psychological and economic abuse and it cuts across boundaries of age race culture wealth and geography. It takes place in the home on the streets in schools the workplace in farm fields refugee camps and during conflicts and crises.
These women are our mothers our girlfriends our wives our daughters our colleagues and our friends. How have we allowed this to occur? In Australia and around the world the White Ribbon Campaign asks men to speak out and take the oath swearing never to commit excuse or remain silent about violence against women.
“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” Martin Luther King
