The Grove could not be said to be a multicultural community. Multiculturalism is the idea that different groups within a society should be encouraged to follow their own cultural paths.

We have a very homogeneous community in terms of ethnicity and faith background. We also have a very stable and safe community. This shows up in all the local statistical measures.

Knowing our own community profile and valuing who we are is not something most of us are likely to think of but what we don’t understand and value we may always lose.

We do have some migrants living here but they are a small minority fit in well and are valued members of our local community.

While Australia as a whole always strongly promotes multiculturalism this policy is now regarded as a failure in Europe and proclaimed dead. European critics of multiculturalism say that failure to integrate immigrant populations has resulted in generations of immigrants who don’t speak the local language well lack basic skills and have become a drag on welfare systems. Multiculturalism is described as a total failure. French President Nicolas Sarkozy Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel and Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron have joined together to pronounce multiculturalism dead.

Some nations feel forced to take extreme measures by banning behaviour that stongly conflicts with local values. In some places locals have been moving out because it doesn’t feel like home any more.

Instead of multiculturalism across Europe integration is now being called for with mandatory language courses. There are fewer translations of government materials in libraries courts and other government offices.

Their approach is now to focus on integration rolling back multiculturalism and requiring immigrants to take courses on values (such as what it means to be a national of that country women’s rights and a historical overview of the country) and agree to abide by them.

Long-term residents are being given priority treatment over newcomers for housing.

Groups that aren’t the slightest bit interested in integrating or teach against integration are no longer tolerated.
