You may remember a small fruit and vege shop opposite Ferny Grove Primary school called Prickly Pear. It closed down recently. I happened to meet with its owner last night and had a very interesting discussion.
The closure was prompted by food shortage during the floods and being ‘priced’ out of the market by supermarkets. Apparently 30-40 small fruit and vege businesses were closed last year and with current aggressive supermarket pricing it is predicted that most fruit and vege businesses will have to close down.
But there is good news! Prickly Pear is now trading online as ‘Vegeout’. They source locally and from the Rocklea markets. This is local trading at its best! The online store seems amazing- prices are very good and there is free next day delivery for orders over $30. I will definitely be giving it a go.

I know it is convenient to just pop into the supermarket and get all your groceries in one hit. But I encourage you (and myself!) to take a pause in our busy lives and consider the decisions we make and what/who they support.
