Expressways have made China a unified continental country in a way that it never was before. Products are being shipped all over the country allowing for first-time domestic economic development – just as the US achieved and the EU has tried to emulate and of course we in Australia have gained from our federation. Back then I doubt they were aware of peak oil as an immediate issue but obviously they are now. All the more reason that they should wish now to research alternative power sources for transport. Research may be much easier to organise in China and more affordable than in the US.
